It's hilarious how popular KFC is here. And since everything delivers in Cairo, you constantly see the KFC motorcycles winding through traffic. I always like when I see one at like 8 am.
Also, Hardee's. Very big here, apparently.
It's the Halal chicken thing. They're hugely popular everywhere in the middle east.
Also, if you want to be hilariously inundated in American brands go to the citystars mall. I stayed at the Intercontinental attached to it and it's hilarious....like a parody of American suburban mall culture.
I just went to city stars! OMG it's enormous and full of "not quite right" chain restaurants.
Examples?
Pretty much everything in Cairo is "not quite right." The expats apparently get a little exhausted by it and 1-2 times/month they go to city stars, this massive two-towered 9-story mall that kind of insulates you from all that Cairo-ness. It has a 3-D theater with "deluxe" seats that recline and stuff, and it has a food court with things like Johnny Rockets, Macaroni Grill, etc. And the food's pretty close, but there's always something weird or missing. For whatever reason, we ate at "El Chico's" last weekend. I got fajitas. The steak was okay, but the chicken was not seasoned. At all. Also, it came only with some guac, pico, and sour cream (<--wtf?) and a side of fries and corn. One the same plate. It's kind of like that SNL "almost pizza" skit.
They also play a drinking game where the first person to ask "why" about something in Cairo has to buy the next round. It is actually a pretty difficult game. On the way there, my cab passed a bum standing on the off-ramp dressed as a rodeo clown. In the tech stores, they all advertise the new Galaxy III or whatever, but the only model they have out is the dummy version. And it's connected to the anti-theft device. You can't check out the real one. You just have to buy it. In the restaurant, if you order guacamole for the chips, they make this big, benihana rough ridin' production about bringing all the crap out and making it fresh right in front of you. But they leave in some of the peel and they don't have limes (but go very heavy on the cilantro).
Why? For the love of god, why?
