Would you even attempt to see any other part of Japan (e.g. country side or whatever) or just cruise around Tokyo?  Couldn't really go wrong either way.

Other things that I have always wanted to see/do in Japan:

Sleep in one of those cubby hole hotel things after a hard sake night
Sing Karaoke at place where they take it super serious (might combine with the above)
Eat from one of those strange vending machine-only restaurants
Maybe get a tattoo (I don't have one, but if you are going to get one, Japan seems good)
Watch/gamble on sumo
check out those bath houses
Japanese rock band concert or bar to watch real live Japanese rock bands playing
Go to a video arcade and play all the cool stuff that won't be released in the States for another year
Something to do with a Japanese game show.  Can you go to watch these things live?
Take one of the super fast trains
Go to a baseball game

also, just a fwiw, satoshi spoke crap for english and he was one of the ones that came over to the USA to go to school so I wouldn't plan on anyone over there knowing crap for english either.  I mean, it was mainly hand gestures and confused looks until we figured each other out.

Go to Rio. Not Tokyo.

wow what a fantastic list

I know someone who minored in Japanese and spent a summer or semester there or something. She'd be on the train and people would be speaking Japanese saying stuff like "LOL @ that stupid American freak" and she'd be like "I speak Japanese, you guys", and they'd be like, "LOL, the stupid American freak speaks Japanese". Sounded like a great time.

A friend of mine (AND A POSTER ON THIS VERY MESSAGE BOARD) used to date a girl who went to Japan to teach.  She seemed to like it.

I think that's a very good sign that you should go for it, Daris. A very good sign indeed.

also, there are a billion islands that i've never been to. i mean have you seen pictures of stingray city in cayman? i mean how could you not want to do that. in the end though, you're probably right. starting to feel like there is no turning back.

oh, I understand 100%.  I'm the exact same way.  I've just started to tell myself that same thing though.

ok, another satoshi story/bit of info about japan:  we told him to have his parents send him a bunch of sake in a care package because we were in highschool and booze crazy.  his parents always sent him the motherload of awesome care packages and I think they were stupid rich or something.  anyway, he gets this enormous box in the mail and it is completely full of juice boxes.  wait, what on earth, these are SAKE BOXES!  even had little straws like a hi-c.  so, my highschool class gets bombed on juice box sake for about a week.

while i was conducting rigourous (sp?) japan research this morning, i read that a lot of those cubby hole hotel things won't rent out to foreigners because of how complex the rules are to stay there. there is like some list of super complex rules or something. also, most don't allow women. all of the rest seems doable though and is a pretty perfect list.

Daris did you ever see "The Beach" with Leonardo Dicaprio? Go to Thailand and go get isolated on one of those elite islands with some hott fillys. I mean it looked great in the movie besides the people who died and stuff.

thailand would be too time consuming to get to. no directs out of dfw. need to get somewhere as quick as possible. travel it up for maybe five days or so and then hurry home. isn't leo great though?

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

Another Japanese exchange story: when I was little my family hosted this Japanese family with 3 boys for a month during the summer so they could learn English better, they brought a ton of wooden chopsticks with them and could make awesome rubber band guns out of them. Needless to say our basement turned into a reenactment of WW II pretty darn quick, I'll let you figure out who won.
