i read that now is a good time to go.  tourism is down, so restaurant and hotel accessibility is up.

Probably the whole nuclear meltdown thingy.  Just throwing darts though.  :dunno:

I would go to Italy, but that's just me.  Depends on what you want.  Tokyo would for sure be a crap show that you'd never forget.  Italy would be more my style and less crowded, but I prefer old world and countryside to neon lights and crowded streets.  Whatever floats your boat dude.  The world is your oyster.

Would you consider starting another thread about your hatred of Italians?

I'm kind of :ohno: for you, RD.  I'd just hate to see you burn all those points on an impromptu trip where you got home and just kind of went "...meh".  That's a long rough ridin' flight and a lot of points to use.  Then again, I'm a planner and I HATE having buyer's remorse.  I would spend 3 solid months just planning a trip to Tokyo to make sure I got the most out of it.

Everybody's different...follow your heart.

If you go wouldn't you almost have to look up Satoshi and chill with him?

that is probably a possibility.  IIRC he had to go back to Japan after he was no longer a full time student.  I can probably look him up via the super weird family he stayed with in my home town.

This thread is really making me think hard about going to Japan.

Additional things on the list:

Eat at a McDonalds and talk about exactly what is different.

Go to a grocery store and walk around and look at/take pictures of Japanese groceries.

Go to a clothing store and buy an entire set of japanese casual wear, head to toe, put it on and just leave my american clothes there and go walk around the rest of the day.

Walk into office buildings and try to go into places of business and watch people do office work in japanese.

Go to an italian restaurant and see if their italian is super different than our italian.

Hit golf balls at one of those 20 story driving ranges.   We have those here, but the Japs (can you say Japs?) invented them.

Rake in one of those rock gardens with the gravel, and just smooth it all out so there are no lines in it.

Maybe pick a day and wear a cowboy hat and boots the entire day, and pretend to be an American cowboy in Japan.   Really play it up.

Have realator show me apartments for sale in Tokyo.  Tell them I have about $1M to spend and see what that would get me.

An owners meeting in Japan?

Either way, my ideas are actually all pretty cheap to do.   Its the everyday Japanese crap that would fascinate me.

Depending on the bonus miles you are getting (I'm platinum on Delta), just paying retail for the flight might be nearly worth it...keep a status level up, get loads of miles, etc.
