should rick daris go to tokyo
« on: January 26, 2012, 11:26:24 AM »
so i'm about ready to come into a lot of american airlines miles. i live in mhk and want to go somewhere interesting, but don't want to take more than one connecting flight. that means that there has to be a direct to the place that i would go to from either chicago or dallas and it has to be on american. i did a little digging and boom, tokyo. i mean wtf though? why would i go there? i mean i guess the answer is "why not?". there is a direct out of dallas and there are a bunch of hyatts and i could easily transfer my UR reward points to hyatt points and have a free place to stay. could even stay at the hotel that was used for lost in translation. seems like it could be a pretty interesting week of wandering around and not knowing wtf in the world is going on or being said or even what i was eating or how to eat it. thoughts?

yeah. i think i would probably just get a map and put an "x" on where my hotel was and then put it in my pocket and then just get up every morning and start walking. i mean wtf i can't even imagine what i would see. then when i was ready to sleep i just hail a taxi and show him the map.

I didn't read any posts in this thread, but the answer is yes.  Yes, you should definitely go to Tokyo.

I don't smoke, but that looks like a place where you'd want to get really stoned and just see what happens. I mean the flying dragons, weird language, crazy crap going on? I mean it sounds like a good time for people who like to smoke.

***tokyo true story alert***

i have a friend that used to intern at AA. he and the other interns would check weekend flights to see which ones had a ton of availibility and then pick one and go (they could fly for free or for like 35 bucks or something). anyway, once they picked tokyo. they got drunk for free in first class on the way down. spent six hours drinking in tokyo and then hopped a plane back and went into work on monday. i mean wow. also, if i go i would plan on spending more time there than he did.

Hmmmm, I might go with you.  Good friend of mine teaches English there.  Would be nice to have a bi-lingual personal tour guide.

Why would you not go?

I have a friend who went for the weekend, ate blowfish, and came home. Said the blowfish wasn't worth the price.

My high school (very small hayseed town) had a Japanese exchange student named satoshi (sp? no idea).  cool kid.  liked hip hop that hadn't made it to hayseedville, ks.  anyway, moral of the story is that he played on our basketball team and could bomb it from 3pointville, USA population 1 tokyo kid named satoshi.

I think going to Tokyo would be a much more interesting experience than going to London or Paris.

BTW guys my minor was in geography. For the future fire away any questions to fanning if need be when traveling. Tokyo scares the crap out of me, but I'm sure it would be a real treat for Daris

Why would you not go?

because there are other places to go. i mean, when i think about vacations i usually think about beaches. carribean, mexico, etc.

when i get crazy vacation thinking, i think about europe or maybe costa rica or something but i've never ever even thought about tokyo or something similar. never really looked into how few points it takes and how easy it is to get there. then i did the other day and was kind of shocked. i mean the shear absudity of it sounds pretty great but for what it would take points wise i could go to st maarten twice.

Go there.  Do a whiskey commercial.  Meet a girl (are you married?  Doesn't matter).  Realize she pretty much hates her life and husband.  Do karaoke with her and her friends.  Nail some older broad.  Whisper something in original girl's ear.  Go home.
