crying in the office
« on: January 25, 2012, 07:49:49 AM »
There is a group of about 5 people that work in my office that are crying every single day.  Not all of them, but at least one of them and the others are consoling them about whatever it is they are crying about.  They seem to take turns having some deal and crying about it and the rest huddle around them and bring tissues and stuff.  Sometimes I need one of them to do something for me and I have to wait for the crying time to end so I can approach them to do whatever it is I need.  Is this normal?  It's happening right now.

you could either start a rumor about one of them in the group and slowly start taking them down one by one or you could invest in a fart sound machine.

That doesn't sound like something that would be normal at all.

You should leave an anonymous note on their desks when they are away that if they are going to cry at work, they should at least do it in the restroom like any self-respecting person would do.

Shouldn't higher authority step up and tell them to keep their personal life at home?  I mean how much work can they really be getting done if they are crying.  Plus, everyone consoling is also not working.  Essentially 5 people getting paid to counsel each other on their personal bullshit.  IMO, crying person needs to take PTO or sick day, others get back to work.

Leave a note that says if you cry anymore I'm going to kill you so then at least you will know what they are crying about.

PTO or sick days would only go so far, though. Steve says they are crying every day.

Man, combo-fanning is really making me grateful for not having coworkers. Yuck.  :frown:

I would just walk up to the group and act as if everything's normal and they aren't crying or anything.  Ask whoever to do whatever and just say ok thanks and walk away before they can say anything.

Yeah, I send emails but they aren't responding to them during crying time obviously.  I could also call during this time and play off like I don't know it's daily sad time but I don't think they are answering their phones either.  luckily, crying time for Wednesday, January the 25th appears to be over and doing crap I have requested seems to have commenced.

I used to have a secretary pool that did this.  I would ask them what was wrong, listen to their crap and minimize the crap out of it.  If you are good at manipulating you can do this and make them feel really stupid/bad about themselves for crying all without thinking you are an overwhelming dick.

It takes a short time investment because you will have to do this a few times, but eventually it catches on.

If that doesn't work, it's time to identify the main drama queen and fire her ass.

Go up and ask them as if they aren't crying.

This.  That many people crying isn't normal, at all.  But every office has a crier.  My secretary's sister just died after a bad battle with brain cancer and she didn't shed a tear.  Missed one day.

A gal who has been here for several years cries every few weeks.  This past week it was a guy she had met on Match didn't poke her back or something related to online dating.  I just walk into her office and give her an assignment and pretend there aren't 2 other girls there handing her kleenex.

This also but the time investment.  I got involved in trying to minimize a gal's impending foreclosure or making it her fault and it became me more or less telling her she bought way more house than she could afford on a secretary's salary, to go along with her 2006 Dodge nitro.

I would have tried to pick her up by telling her that renting's not that bad.

You think I didn't tell her how great the rental market was?  I also told her the house was shitty and in a shitty neighborhood so no big deal.
