an assignment

65% odds it was modding-related.

Much higher.  Summer clerkship this year will include a dedicated week on modding.   Will rotate.  I may ask you guys to fill out evals on how you think the modding went during each week.  Will be blind so we don't play favorites.

What does your boss say?

I would be very tempted to fire the criers if this is happening multiple times a week every week. Seems like a lot of stolen company time.

I used to have a secretary pool that did this.  I would ask them what was wrong, listen to their crap and minimize the crap out of it.  If you are good at manipulating you can do this and make them feel really stupid/bad about themselves for crying all without thinking you are an overwhelming dick.

It takes a short time investment because you will have to do this a few times, but eventually it catches on.

If that doesn't work, it's time to identify the main drama queen and fire her ass.

This also but the time investment.  I got involved in trying to minimize a gal's impending foreclosure or making it her fault and it became me more or less telling her she bought way more house than she could afford on a secretary's salary, to go along with her 2006 Dodge nitro.

I would have tried to pick her up by telling her that renting's not that bad.

Wrong move. doing so implies too strongly that you rough ridin' care.  It's a tough balance leading them on with initially asking what's wrong, in that you have to minimize it thoroughly enough where they understand you don't care.  Too much and you are a dick and they don't want to do your assignment.  Not enough and they think you care and will therefore keep bringing up the issue to you, or worse update you as the process goes forward and ask for your advice.  You don't want to involve yourself, you just want her to get her ass back to work.

The rental thing is too much unless you really killed her soul in the minimizing stage.  The balance is yours to judge, but be careful.

We should do an Apprentice-style boardroom session at EndOfSummerPAK to see who gets a one-year contract with goEMAW.

We have an encouraging crop this year though I am afraid we won't be able to fire the one girl who is really good at softball as we are counting on her to fill a spot next summer.

There are criers in my office as well.  Luckily their jobs aren't important enough for me to have to talk to them.  I just avoid them and never ever talk to them to make them think that someday I may actually care even a little bit about what is going on in their lives.  T & P's, SD.  I don't know what I would do if I had to deal with them.  Maybe you should go over there, join the crying festival, and when they ask what you are crying for, tell them that you are sad that you want to fire all of them but you probably can't.

the last place I worked at had a knitting group.  They met during lunch time and power-knitted hats and things.  Key here is they did it on their time.  Do they specifically meet to engage in crying sessions?  Send an all-office email asking to make sure group social activity that is not work-related is kept to a minimum. Have them allocate their time appropriately on their time-sheets.  Do they hate everyone else in the office or did they actually try to invite others to cry with them?  Maybe you could take the initiative and make flyers for an upcoming crying party that you schedule and it could say something clever like "It's SteveDave's party and WE can ALL cry if we want to! HAHAHAHA  :frown: " and have the party at a certain address but don't tell them it is actually at a psychologist's office and forewarn the doctor that these crying people will be there and um, they keep crying and it probably has to do with their dad not being there for them, terrible sense of self-worth, whatever just fix them or they're fired, etc..

"I have no idea" would be the answer to most quesitons posed in this thread.  They don't work for me or my team but do provide support staff type work for us and everyone else in the office.  I don't even know who they report to.  Could be their boss is one of these very same criers.

Interesting development. Could explain why they think this is ok.

At my old job (also in Nebraska) we had a lady that nobody liked, and she would cry if we didn't invite her to go out to lunch with us. We just ignored it, it didn't go away, but she was lazy anyway so it's not like she was helping us out a lot. Then she got breast cancer and we had to be nice to her.

This has gone on long enough, every one of you needs to take a long hard look at yourselves and take stock of what you are about and how you are living your lives.  Never once did SD say that these were women, and yet every response seems to take it as fact that they were.  I assume this was some kind of social experiment and I think it has given us all something to think about.

Oh, man, I hope this is just a big ploy to get Mendenhall back on the board.

"listen, when you're done not working, would you mind working while at your job?" Then ask them to do whatever it is you need them to do. If it was something serious they more than likely wouldn't be there.

I for one immediately thought it was men he was dealing with. After all, he said one of the criers was a boss.

give them something to cry about.
