I added 10 years to the catcher's mitt  :D

1 human year = 7 dog years

2 human years = 10 catcher's mitt briefcase years

the advantage is if you need to access your bag very frequently. you can just swing it around without pulling your arm awkwardly out of some strap. i use it on site visits a lot to take notes and get stuff out and put it back.

That makes sense. I see a lot of commuter cyclists use them, and I don't think it makes as much sense for them. I am a backpack loyalist because I never really have to look nice. (Although the bike messenger bags from timbuktu or the German company that makes them from recycled tarps generally look shittier than a backpack.)

You're smart enough to know what will look ridiculous in your office setting, i.e. backpacks are great and I usually use mine on personal trips, but I'm not rolling into court with it.

as a fan of watching how people act in courtrooms I can tell you the further north east you go the more beat up 50 year old catchers mitt'ish the shitty square briefcases become. it's like a contest to see whose is most beat up to show how long you've been whipping ass in the court room. the further west you go the more likely you are to see an attorney with an ipad or backpack.

This was very interesting. The West Coast addendum was a nice one.

I've just recently learned one of the best lessons of my life. When you need a bag, have your woman help pick it out. Or even just have her go ahead and get it for you. Women are totally rough ridin' obsessed with bags and spend about half of their lives thinking about them. I've now done this for my last two bags - a briefcase and a day pack. These things have all kinds of features and pockets that I never could have imagined existed. And now that I have them, I totally use and appreciate them!

Everyone is different. But when you tell your woman that you want a bag, she'll be like, "what do you want to use it for? Do you want to use it for this or that? Do you ever plan to do such and such with it," and so on. Then, she comes back with this thing that has like magical powers to make your life more awesome.

not to dox myself but I carry this bad boy everyday

https://www.zappos.com/p/scully-solvang-workbag-brown/product/8979497/color/6

Fits umbrella (sorry trim), surface pro, banana and plenty of room for other stuff like a pair of shoes.  Latches well and has good zipper pockets with a bunch of organizational holes in said zipper pocket I don't use one bit because who uses all those card holders etc in this type of bag.  Very long strap to go crossbody and silverback anybody I encounter.
