Wireless router recommendos
« on: October 03, 2011, 10:29:14 AM »
Is there really any difference between routers?

I need one that has a strong signal, wireless N capable.

Wal-Mart has some for $30 and some for $100.

Not a bad deal, in the gold box.

Get a dual band one.
Where did you get that overnight bag?

Here's some good advice I found in another thread

just buy a good one.  make sure it is N and it will be fast (assuming you wireless card thing is N).
you really don't need an N router, grab a G and you'll be fine.  donald trump.  /thread

the netgear G router they sell at wal-mart for $35 is easy to set up

Horrible advice. N>> G too many benefits to list.

As to answer the question, I am a fan on the Netgear N300 ( WNR3500L ). 300 Mbps and Gigabit Router. Easy setup too. Goes for about $70 on amazon.

I want to put a HDD behind the router and connect it to the router with a USB 3.0 port.

thanks, is there special software the router would need to do that?  or is it just plug and play?

USB 3.0, kind of pointless right now.

k, i read that external hdd transfers can be slow so i wanted to make sure and give it the most bandwidth i could.

the whole reason why i am dealing with this is because my router (airport extreme) has decided to only assign one IP address at a time. so i can't hit the internet with more than one device at a time.  on the 2nd device, i'll get a "Self-Assigned IP Address"
