Is there really any difference between routers?
I need one that has a strong signal, wireless N capable.
Wal-Mart has some for $30 and some for $100.

Not a bad deal, in the gold box.
Get a dual band one.
-
Here's some good advice I found in another thread
just buy a good one. make sure it is N and it will be fast (assuming you wireless card thing is N).
you really don't need an N router, grab a G and you'll be fine. donald trump. /thread
the netgear G router they sell at wal-mart for $35 is easy to set up

damn, missed the gold box. someone came into my office.

Horrible advice. N>> G too many benefits to list.
As to answer the question, I am a fan on the Netgear N300 ( WNR3500L ). 300 Mbps and Gigabit Router. Easy setup too. Goes for about $70 on amazon.

I want to put a HDD behind the router and connect it to the router with a USB 3.0 port.

Good idea!

thanks, is there special software the router would need to do that? or is it just plug and play?

Don't know, should work fine though, think the router has some software that comes w/ it?
-
i mean, I just plug in a hard drive and share that crap
-
alright. i guess all the security software will be built into the router firewall.

alright. i guess all the security software will be built into the router firewall.
yep, all you will have to do is download your new IP address and you'll be sharing files like nobodies business

linksys!

not sure if this helps or not but I just got a new one and it's pretty good.

-
ok. is there any dual band N router with USB 3.0 that anyone wants to recommendo?
-
http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN56U/
usb2.0 but still really worth the money
-
USB 3.0, kind of pointless right now.
-
kinda doubt usb 2.0 is gonna be a bottleneck on your wireless router
-
USB 3.0, kind of pointless right now.
k, i read that external hdd transfers can be slow so i wanted to make sure and give it the most bandwidth i could.
the whole reason why i am dealing with this is because my router (airport extreme) has decided to only assign one IP address at a time. so i can't hit the internet with more than one device at a time. on the 2nd device, i'll get a "Self-Assigned IP Address"

No crap. clams, just have saul and brad fix it for you.
-
of course i have tried to troubleshoot it. obv not very good with networking stuff.
-
I bet your DHCP range is set to like...one number.
Check stuff in the DHCP settings.
If that doesn't work try assigning a static IP to the second device. IP address could be something like 192.168.1.45, gateway to 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
-
i'll take a look at that tonight. its hard to troubleshoot because i get into the router and lose my internet connection so i can't research while i'm working on it.

I have a router thingy question. I bought a middle version router at best buy. Netgear prob $65? I dont get that great of signal up in my bedroom even though it said I should on the box. Should I buy a booster thingy, or a new, more powerful router thingy? I also want the least amount of cancer these thingys are probably giving me.
Thanks

Try changing the channel in the router interface. Should be 1-11 or something like that. There might be interference on one of the channels that is hurting your signal.

Dual band next time.
-
What does that do? I just want to be able to bbs in bed? So I shouldn't get a thingy to boost the signal, I should just get a dual band one and this will fix everything?
-
hey idiots buy the one I recommended

Pretty much all the same. Just get Great Value or some crap.
-

I may. I have a single band N but it gets all jacked up when we are streaming on our WD and both on our laptops.

Late to thread but I have an Apple AirPort Extreme (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD031LL/A/airport-extreme-base-station?fnode=4d) because it's badass and because I'm :kstategrad: emaw.
-
Should have bought the Asus. Linksys has been in the shitter since Cisco ruined them. They seem to be getting better, but Asus has had great reviews.
-
it doesn't matter. they all work the same. they all follow the same IEEE standards.

EasyTomato (http://www.easytomato.org/) along with the compatible Asus router that it was designed for has been awesome for me.

alright, my turn.
just got internets (20 Mbps max) from TWC. the router/modem combo they gave me sucks ass. im very capable of going to best buy and asking that geeky dude to give me one but i bet theres something better on the web out there. looking to spend around $100 max.

what makes it "sucks ass"?

I have a very old router and I think it messes up my wireless printer. And sometimes there are weird disconnects. What should I buy to replace it? Keep in mind I have a pretty small house and most of the internetting is done in the same room as the router (or very close to it).
-
I replaced an older Linksys with this last fall.
https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R7000.aspx
It's in their midrange. I've been pleased. We do streaming (1 Roku, 1 Chromecast, 1 SmartTV), 2 Laptops, an Ipad, and an Apple Desktop, plus Wi-Fi calling on our cellphones, as well as 2 HP wireless printers. No issues, no disconnects, easy setup.

Were you yessing dax's recommendo?
thank you for the tips, friends. I might update the ol' cable modem at the same time.
-
Can you just do a router/modem combo? I had a small (650 sqft) apt in Topeka and the one I got from cox worked just fine. I had 5ghz all the way to the parking lot as well.
-

Maybe? I need someone else to tell me the answer to that.
-
I know I avoided renting from xfinity because it is a ripoff.
-
Im not up on all of the technology. I'm sure someone else can answer it better as far as the quality. Had it for a year. Never had an issue. Would save on space/etc. Just a point to ponder. Good luck.
-
If you get one from your cable provider then you pay probably $20 a month for the privilege. Just buy the exact same one and save the money.
I got a google onhub wireless router and my speed tripled (my old one was probably 5 years old). I think google has already moved on to those pucks though. I just get whatever modem the internet company recommends.
-
You are correct. I just searched for xfinitycompatible modem/routers. Came up with a fair amount of results. Wish I knew more.
-
Yeah. What ChiCat said more succinctly.

The long answer is it really depends on your usage. The short answer is yes you can totally do that.

It looked like xfinity didn't support a modem/wireless combo for my service so I just bought a supported cable modem and sd's router.

Good choice

I have their just step down version RT-AC51U, and it's pretty damn good,. I have a 1800sqft house so I get coverage easily all over my house, and all over my yard. Love it.
Also glad I paired with with the 16 channel motorola modem (don't have the part # on me) but also glad I didn't rent, eff that.
-
damn I got it delivered already and did a speed test and went from 70mps to 180mps.

What’s the new hot POA everybody is talking about these days? It’s time for a refresh.
-
it's not hot or new but I have google wifi with three spots across my mcmansion and it has very good coverage. I had some fancy asus thing with over a billion antennas that was supposed to be hot crap but I had dead spots in my place. I work from home and need fast AF internet in whichever bathroom I'm spending time in and this does that for me like the porcupine looking asus thing didn't.
-
Hmm
-
plus a 3 pack was cheaper than the asus thing on its own. $250 for 3 which covers a giant area. BUT, it only has one ethernet port per deal so I have an ethernet switch from the main one for my sonos, shared storage thing, hard wire ethernet stuff, etc. to run off of. but that's like $20 on amazon.
-
I bought a 100’ cat6 to hardwire in my main office for my new place. I had Ethernet jacks in every room and paid Cox like $100 to get them all hot in MHK. I don’t have Ethernet jacks in every room in my new place :frown:
My issue is the latency being at 35ms right now over WiFi! that’s unacceptable
-
When we built our house I had cat 6 run to everything.

DBT, let me know what you get and if it is good. I’ll need a new one in a few weeks.

I just roll with the standard Google router they give you. It's fine.

I have this one at our house. It seems to be working very well with great range.
https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R8000.aspx
-
https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/deco/deco-m5/
We put this into our house a while back and love it. Covers all of the basement, ground floor, garage, and back yard. I also like being able to shut off the kid's internet at the push of a button from my phone until they get their grades back up (or if they're being little asses and I just want to flex my power on them).
-
Orbi mesh is refurbished on woot today.
-
I think I'm going to need a range extender that can plug in right by the balcony for that pellet grill. The wifi transmitter on the one I got was busted and they're sending another one, but even if it works perfect and connects with where my router has to be, I'll be more comfortable knowing I have a much closer connection when it comes to being away from my place and hoping the thing works with respect to controlling fire.
-
The main router I have is a dual band and it had been set where both bands had the same name and all devices could figure out whether to be on the 2.4 or 5.0. As part of the troubleshooting for the smoker, they had me give the 2 bands different names so that I could be sure the smoker was connecting on 2.4.
Now, when I go get some sort of range extender that will plug into the electric outlet right by the deck, should I get one that's 2.4 only, which seems rare? If I get one that's the more typical dual-band, is there a similar step I'll have to take to have it properly recognizing and segregating the 2 bands or will it figure it out on its own?
I'm kind of hoping that with the range extender, I could go back to not having the 2 bands with different names and that having the thing 6 feet from the extender will allow it to do whatever it does and get on the right band just like everything else does.
Saul?
-
If the smoker is only 2.4ghz capable it can't see the 5.0ghz band. It's impossible. It would only join 2.4ghz, so any extender should do fine.

T-Y. I'm thinking that even having to segregate the bands was just some bullshit the smoker guy said to distract from that the range on the thing sucks ball(s). Once I get it, I'm gonna switch the bands back how I had them and see if it mattered.

Nobody in my house will own up to it but I have a theory that someone was working on their spirals and hurled a football at that thing a while back and pretty much destroyed it.
Whatever happened I am sure it went down in a blaze of glory. So you can do what you want with those tips.

Bought that extender, reverted my wifi bands to having the same name and password and tested a bit. Looks like it'll work but I don't have time tonight to have this going for 6 hours to see if it sticks.
I'm getting the sense that I WILL need to go back to segregating the bands. When I'm moving around my place, my phone loses the wifi connection at times, and I think maybe that it's going from the 5.0 it's on normally to the 2.4 as I get closer to where the extender is. I need my phone to be on the same 2.4 band as the smoker to keep control over it, so I'm thinking if I segregate them I can specify my phone to stay on the 2.4 and not have it bouncing around and losing connect with the smoker. Pretend I'm not a main administrator and advise if that make sense.
I'm gonna at least stay as is until my first attempt to make something, but kind of want to know if that will be the quick fix should I need it.

You don't need to be on the same band as the smoker.
Without knowing what kind of signal strength you have in these areas its hard to say exactly what your issue is. 2.4 kind of sucks and you run into alot of issues in regards to interference with that band compared to 5 ghz. Microwaves are notorious for causing problems in 2.4.
Are you an iphone or android guy? There are wifi scanner apps out there that will show you signal strength for each band and that can help identify if the problem is signal strength related or not.
Wifi Analyzer for Android (free)
Network Analyzer for iOS (3.99)
running that will give you a sense of what kind of signal issues you have.

If that first part is correct, then I think the problem is solved. As far as I could tell yesterday, I was staying connected despite me and my phone moving around and presumably switching between 2.4 and 5, but I didn't test it for more than a couple minutes. I was just expecting I might have the problem over the course of 4-8 hours.
Am I misreading or mishearing what the grill people are telling me, or are they just dumb/liars?
I guess I could still see there being some benefit to segregating the bands if my phone keeps flopping between bands as I get closer to the balcony where the extender is and cutting out my connection momentarily, but I'll burn that bridge and light the way if I keep coming to it.
Other than this grill, I've had no range/signal issues. I've got all new crap from Xfinity and it's a 1-bedroom condo that's like 1/4 the size of a house that might need all extenders, mesh, etc. for normal stuff. But I did happen to download that wifi analyzer app yesterday; my buddy who's coming over Saturday for a test run on the grill while we finish off all the remaining 2-person tasks I need to do to finish being moved in told me to get it so we can test if necessary. But I think this ticket is on the verge of being closed.
-
Not sure if it's possible on your extender, but could you mac address filter the extender so that only your grille would link to it? basically banning your phone from connecting to it?

As far as I could tell yesterday, I was staying connected despite me and my phone moving around and presumably switching between 2.4 and 5, but I didn't test it for more than a couple minutes. I was just expecting I might have the problem over the course of 4-8 hours.
The only reason both devices would need to be on the same channel would be if the communication went like this:
phone -> smoker
since it's this:
phone -> wireless router -> repeater -> smoker
no concerns
Am I misreading or mishearing what the grill people are telling me, or are they just dumb/liars?
Well I mean Traeger did post that split name nonsense publicly on their web site so.....
1-bedroom condo that's like 1/4 the size of a house that might need all extenders, mesh, etc. for normal stuff.
Yeah I would assume you are probably right but it's never a bad idea to do a walk through to see what kind of signal you get. Also if it's a condo and there are other wifi routers in the building within earshot of yours they could all be contending for the same airtime so knowing what channels are being used and not used is good info. Phones are great to test with because they generally have the lowest power radios of any device you will see in your home (Laptops have higher power radios compared to phones and other iOT devices (like that grill)
Ideally you want to see a received signal strength better than -70 everywhere with the best strengths trending towards zero (-60 -50 RSSI etc) Where this falls is key to the kind of speeds you will see as the worse the signal gets the more the data rate goes down and speed slows to a crawl.

Also may need to change the channel that your wifi is broadcasting on too if others are similar.

Cool, these are all things I vaguely understand and match what the irl person who will be here Saturday was saying. I think I have everything we’ll need to knock this out.
Also just occurred to me that if any of this smoker/extender stuff is causing any non-smoker things to be janky, I could simply unplug the range extender all the time I’m not smoking.

This guy works well for me. The only issue is the extenders don't have an ethernet plug on them if you have anything you need to hardwire. No idea if it's better than what you're looking at but I like it.

this has probably been answered itt, but do the three mesh points all use the same network and password? like, i don't have to connect to a different network to use the separate mesh points, correct?

no, it's very seamless. there is no difference than having just one router from an experience standpoint (other than more range obviously). I even unplugged one that my wife was using for a video call the other day and her call never dropped or stuttered. just switched over to the next best signal and kept going. you can check on the app which one you are connected to and what the signal strength is to move them around to optimize the spot for them. I have a wired one on the second floor and a wired one on the main floor hooked to the modem. wireless one plugged in next to my kids switch in the family room and a wireless one in the basement. we probably don't need 4 and three would be just fine but we have that many so I'm using that many.
-
in your experience, does the mesh point relay the exact quality of the signal it receives, or does it truly "boost" it?
ex. i've done a speed test with my laptop from the spot on the third floor where i think the mesh point would go, and the signal seems fairly pud. would the mesh point boost that strength or just relay what it receives?
-
Just a friendly reminder to the board. You can mesh network all day long and twice on Sunday to try and avoid the government, but if they control the actual access to the Internet itself. . . welp, hate it for ya.
-
I don't know that a mesh network has anything to do with avoiding the gov

I'm not sure there. We got it because our basement TV wasn't getting a great signal so it would buffer occasionally. it made that never happen anymore. we have super fast internet though. like 800mb down. Cox "Gigablast". Giga seems like I would be getting 1gb down Cox you assholes but whatever.

Maybe "blast" is tech-speak for "but not really"?

As long as you space the nodes reasonably close together you’ll be money. If you have three floors, then you’ll likely just need three nodes.
-
And yes they boost the signal, that’s the entire point of the system.
-
thank you all. i have 1gb Google but it seems to struggle going vertically through whatever our old ass house was constructed out of. i'm feeling confident the mesh would help.

My cox got 2-3x faster when updating my approx 5 year old router. That's not to advocate for my particular set up, just updating to current hardware every few years.

If you use the Google internet box as a router also know it's straight trash and you can definitely up range and speed by replacing it. The mesh prob works fine too tho

I am probably due to do this with my router/modem soon as I have had both for 4 years (I paid for my own modem, eff paying that equipment fee, I've basically already paid for the damn thing nearly 2x over at this point). We have had AT&T gig for years but I am technology hindered and did not realize we needed to get a router other than their’s to really take advantage of it. Our connection would always drop out and then reconnect or or be buffering, even in the same room as the router.
Well, fast forward to a couple weeks ago and I installed Eero Pro 6. My life is better. Have not dropped connection once, no buffering, I am finally getting what I was paying for. Only problem was connecting some lower bandwidth devices but the app is so easy, even I could do it. As easy as disabling the higher bandwidth, and it automatically restores itself after it gives time for connection establishment:
10/10 would buy again.

Need to know about your router situation first, because 250 should be more than enough. (I'd heard rumors of certain Speed Daemons on this board opting for a whopping 2 GIGS, but in my view that's not necessary unless you're transferring large amounts of data.)

I have Cox gigabit/blast whatever and I had to upgrade my router to get value out of it as my old one constrained the speed quite a bit. I have data caps that I rarely hit, but occasionally do between working from home and doing all of my TV streaming. I'm typically between 600-800 Mbps download speeds.

So, my dad has a shop about 40 feet from his house that he'd like to have wifi in. He just has a basic router that won't quite reach to the shop. A mesh routing system wouldn't be the best for this situation, correct? Maybe just a repeater/extender closer to the shop?
-
I think it could work. would allow you to place the base nearer the shop and the satellite ones in the shop and on the other side of the house.
-
I feel like a mesh would still have trouble reaching, but the best chance of making it work is to have a node in the house closest to where the shop is
-
Going through two exterior walls will be tough
-
yeah, 40 ft may be close enough to just run Cat7 or whatever over there to a mesh satellite?
-
Running a hardwire would probably be last resort. I love my mesh routers at my house and I could set one up in the window nearest the shop and then another in the window of the shop probably.
Using a repeater or extender would essentially be a second network, right? If he left his house and went to the shop, he'd have to switch networks?

Do any gE network elites have recommendations for beefing up the security for home wireless routers? I went in and renamed my network and added a really long password. Also changed the username and password that came with the router itself. As far as I can tell, it has the WPA2 setting. Is there anything else that I should change?

n00b streaming question:
I've been having problems with my Firestick buffering while watching sports (esp on ESPN+) but not during movies and TV shows.
I went ahead and ordered a new Firestick as the current one is about 3 - 4 years old.
The firestick is located about 3 feet from my wireless router and fast.com says my download speed is 90+ mbps.
An ethernet connection to the firestick shouldn't be needed to get rid of the buffering, right?
-
No
-
Really seems like an ESPN app problem. If you're still on the old stick, I would try deleting and reinstalling the app.

I am trying out one of Spectrum's new wireless routers instead of my own, and I am quite pleased thus far.
On a consumer note, via bundling I'm paying the same for a good TV package, Internet (their base speed is now 500Mbs, and I"m on the next tier at the 500Mbps price) and 3 mobile phones, and an Ipad for what I was once paying just for the mobile phones on a different carrier, and Spectrum Mobile uses Verizon.
I also use the Spectrum app for TV, instead of cable boxes, and their recent app upgrade is not only a very nice upgrade from a usability perspective, I believe their picture quality has improved as well.

You could try deleting/reinstalling Hulu. I started using the ESPN app because the feed is 30 seconds to a minute ahead of Hulu.

Got the new 4K max firestick installed and it seems to have fixed the buffering issue so far. I'm also using the USB port on the back of the TV to power the Firestick instead of plugging it into a powerstrip. The firestick should shut off / cool down any time the TV is off now. Optimistic this will give optimal conditions for streaming Cat basketball games this winter.
