Heading to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in two weeks for work. Any tips?

sounds awesome. take lots of pics.

from what we were told by the client, taking pictures is a sign of terrorism there and is strictly not allowed.  :frown:

I took pics there. Granted, that was 4 years ago. Maybe things have changed.

Holy crap. I might be able to go from Austin to Liverpool and back and go see Everton play Liverpool for under $12-1300 in October.

so, I cruise around tripadvisor constantly.  garyraba is probably the best reviewer I've come across.  here is his review of gramercy tavern.  his others are great too:

Reviewed June 20, 2012 we were the guests of a friend and we had a blast. Service par none. Wine selection (from whihc our host selected an Austrian Reisling and then a Prager Pinot) was really great.

Food courses run the full gammet and the portions are perfect for grazing one's way thru the menu' pork belly, carpaccio and then main course.

Id return tomorrow if i were still going to be here.

here's his review of Dovetail

Think of a perfect restuarant- this is it”
Reviewed June 20, 2012 NEW we had a great dinner there on NY's hottest night of the year. Kristin and Natalie took great care of us in helping pick a menu.

The food was what you'd expect of a place like this; flavor raised to the power of ten. Really. we started with a rather indulgent bottle of wine for the table and were treated with small plate after small plates of tastey treats ranging from inventive original opulent textures and tastes with incredible small surprises (lilac flower) to cucumber flavored sorbet. The scallops were incredible, the cod even more so.

Id have to say the avacado salad had the most surprise flavors that you want to lick the plate!

DO it. Go there. Great place to impress some clients or that favorite person in your life.

your client sounds like dumbass

even if he's partially right

:dunno: they probably are dumb asses, but not risking it on this. Project manager says he's had his cell phone confiscated to check for pictures and had to pay bribes.

baker, you prob want to buy a cheap GSM phone (w/no camera) and buy a GSM chip when you get over there from a local company.  much cheaper than paying your domestic carrier.  and they don't have cdma networks in congo if that's what phone you have now.

Yeah, we are providing local phones for the team members. Everything is being paid for and we didn't want them to run up a $2,000.00 phone bill and be like, "you said everything was paid for..."

good tips 'lams

My Canadian friend traveled to Syria and a few places in Northern Africa recently. This is probably legit advice in the city at least. Respect that "risk" warning. Before the uprising, Syrian plainclothes would typically follow you and warn you (and follow you some more). They often don't eff around that much in Africa. Don't take pictures or loiter around buildings.

My advice would be to get at least 5 hours of sleep the first night you're there so that you don't die the second night.  Don't forget to factor in that you will be drinking all day tomorrow at the pool.

It's not the P&L.  It's pretty good.  Good eateries/bars.  Petco is right there if the Padres are in town.  I'm personally a bigger fan of the La Jolla area but I like both.

La Jolla is good for during the day and beach. Gaslamp gets going around 5ish and lasts all night.

yeah, this is good advice.  like, stay in the gaslamp and head to Mission Beach and La Jolla areas during the day.

No, it's not a bunch of chain restaurants/bars owned by an out of town corporation that steals tax dollars from the City.

well...there's a Palm and Nobu iirc.  I mean, not the type of chains that would be in KC but still kind of chains.
