My parents did the Viking Rhine cruise from Amsterdam to Basel a couple years ago for their first over seas trip.  Absolutely loved it and still talk about it frequently.

A coworker of mine is on his first day back from doing this exact trip on Ama & loved it.

My dad got the Viking catalog last night & wants to do 7 different ones.

My parents loved their first Viking trip but subsequent ones have been problematic.  Viking changed some ports late on one.  They also did one in Europe where the river was too low to have everyone onboard so Viking would bus everyone between ports and then they would board to eat/sleep.

Except for the low river one, I think they've generally enjoyed Viking for European trips and had bad experiences with them in North/South America.  I guess I'd probably see when the river's low season is before booking one.

My parents have never been over seas. They’ve been to Canada, Mexico & Caribbean cruises, but never over an ocean. I’ve finally convinced them to do a European river cruise. I’m trying to plan it for them now. It’s a lot of fun.

prepare them for being the youngest people on the boat and it won't be particularly close.

This is a good point. They would rather do Ama that Viking, but they want to go late summer, early fall. That’s the worst time for low water. I might push them to do a Mediterranean cruise instead.

They’re also open to any cruise that they might find a last minute deal & they need to wait until July to make sure my mom is good to go. This may work out so they can wait to see if there’s any last minute deals & can see if water levels start dropping. If water levels are low they can just abort until next summer.

I will give Vietnam that every single thing I've eaten here is absolutely top tier. None of it is Vietnamese, but it's all excellent.

This is good to hear. They look like they kinda rule in terms of where you get to go. Though they def look to be for older people.

I was worried about our guys appetite in Asia. Glad it's working out. Hope he has some pho, though.

My fave thing in Vietnam was going to an ATM and getting 10,000,000 Dong. Most dong I've ever had in my hand.

Now I'm looking at Southeast Asia in November or so.  My wife and I were going to do the KSU Ireland game but half the reason was to visit her family in England and they'll be gone.  I'll take any pro-tips.  No country is definite but I've heard good things about Vietnam and Laos.

Also I just found this out like a week ago but I inadvertently booked my time in Thailand during Songkran (the water festival recently featured on season 3 of HBO's hit show "The White Lotus")

Must go to lady boy show and a rooftop bar. One of those red light districts is interesting but very creepy to watch old white americans in there. Gross.
