I stopped at one of those tiny 7 seat bars for a whiskey last night and there were 2 other customers and a bartender there. I was talking with this 60ish year old dude through a translator app and he connected kansas to "western drama films" which he thought was the coolest thing in the world. Then he tells me in English that I'm a "big boy" (fat) and I say it's because I'm American and everyone there laughed their balls off. 10/10.

Don't be an idiot

Maybe if I was with a group of people, but even more than not wanting to participate I don't want to subject myself to listening.

Are like bars with karaoke a thing in Japan? I thought it was pretty much all private rooms.

Yes, that's the question I'm asking. When I think of karaoke in most of the US, I think of a townie dive bar with a host and people singing for the entire place.

When I think of karaoke in Asia, I think of places with dedicated private karaoke rooms where you and your group are the only people singing for each other in your room.

New thing to think about for vacation planning. House…. rules, beach access… rules, local bars/restaurants….pretty good, pool/backyard rules…….except pool temp is negative 15 degrees. Forgot to check for heated pool. Still better than KS in March. Happy spring break friends.

In the videos I've seen it's always the private rooms. Usually there is like dinner and drinks too and you rent the space for like 90 minutes.

Osaka was pretty meh tbh. I wish I would have split off to Kyoto sooner instead cause it's pretty cool.

I went to the American village in Osaka and that was kinda lol. It's filled with young Japanese hipsters buying nirvana t-shirts and weird antique stores with cereal box toys and the occasional 1930's style racist caricature.

I didn't talk to a single person in Osaka so unfortunately I am unable to answer that particular question.

I feel like basically 100% of the people who go to Japan will afterward recommend less time in Tokyo and more time in Kyoto.
