I only went to a resort in Jamaica and it was great except I never wanted to hear Bob Marley ever again.

Another question for my elite international traveling bros. Am updating info for my flights home and noticed that Lufthansa (spell???) wants more money to select seats. I'm prob going to just pay it to make it easy, but I was curious if this is just a trick and they will seat my family together anyway. Again, I'm prob just paying to make sure, and I bet a very high % of people do and they just LOL at getting another $200 and would have sat my kid next to me anyway.

we never pay and usually get decent seats.  probably will be pretty easy to switch once on the plane if you don't, assuming someone in your party is willing to take a middle seat.  no one wants to sit next to a lone child.

Thanks. I'll prob pay for the long flight home, but risk it for the transfers. There are 4 of us and Mrs SF would be freaking if the kids weren't at least together or near us. I would guess they would try and get us together and/or we will find something together at check in, but i'm not sure she will risk it. As you said, I can't imagine they want to sit random under 12 year olds next to a random person.

 This is so true. They pump that crap on outdoor speakers during all waking hours. We only left the grounds once (to go to Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, lol), and the taxi hustle was shady.

Also, on the shuttle from the airport to the resort, the driver turned to me and asked, "Do you smoke?" "Smoke what?" "Bob Marley, mon!"

The thing is I would have loved like a DJamer playing all dancehall or even just a variety of reggae. There's so much good stuff there! But it was like they played half of Bob Marley legend on repeat 24-7

It's been a few years since I've been to the core of Austin, which means it's likely completely different. For music, hit up the Saxon Pub or the Continental Club (or the upstairs at the Continental Club). If you're more of a honky tonk man, there's also the Broken Spoke.

I know you're a BBQ-head, so you'll want to hit up Terry Black's, probably. I assume you don't want to wait in line for 4 hours at Franklin's.

Austin's main culinary specialty is breakfast tacos. I don't know who the current new hotness is, though. Can probably get some good results Googling.

Stay away from "Dirty 6th" (street). If you want to hit up any bars, most of the bar districts are played out. All the cool kids hang out on the East Side, now (east of I-35). 7th Street has a nice little district, but there are other places on the East Side, too.

If you're looking to do any nature stuff let me know.

I mean, I guess I need to know what you're looking for and how touristy you want to be. This is the most touristy thing I could think of. Bats! Kinda cool to see once, but once is enough. We get it, there's 1.5 million bats that all emerge from under the bridge at once.

we’re doing that!  i’m going to wait in franklin’s line too!
i’m really most interested in food spots, so i’ll look into that sweet breakfast taco hookup.

Migas tacos at Veracruz are a must.

Hamilton Pool is pretty groovy, but I think they are having issues so only part of the area is open.  Still might be neat to see.

Hamilton Pool is a bit of a trek. If water activities are in play, Barton Springs Pool is your jam. Then you get the bonus of checking out Zilker Park and the various adjacent things there, like the sculpture garden and the Zilker Botanical Garden (neat place).

Basketball point-wise, omari lawrence never scored in any of his three trips to austin as a ‘cat, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting his take on what to eat there, or anywhere.

If you have a car and are going to drive to hill country, I think the Salt Lick is worth it for the whole ambience.

Anthem and Peached Tortilla are both good.  Kemuri Tatsu-Ya has been recommended to me by smart people but I didn't get a reservation last time.  The way the host laughed when I tried to get in without a reservation makes me think it's very popular.

I think I'm going to go to Japan and somewhere else in the area. First thought is Korea because it's right there but I'm not set on it. Other options are Thailand, Hong Kong, or Vietnam (or insert se Asian location I might not have considered). Any suggestion on one over the others? Time frame would be October or March most likely. I'm mostly looking for a fun walking around the city experience and observing a different culture than all the western nations I've been to.

I would say S. Korea. Thailand is dirt cheap and you could get into some smutty stuff, if you want. Hong Kong is expensive af. I've not heard much about Vietnam, other than it's similar to Thailand. I'd do Korea, and I have a few YouTube channels you can watch to get you pumped up.

Just whatever comes up on the ol' algo. Mostly been focusing on Japan thus far though. It's very much helped my food apprehension which is my biggest hang up with traveling.
