The place we stayed was over an hour away from there so either Gooch was secretly meeting someone while we were on vacation together (probably met them by ATV) or else he went on a separate secret vacation without me.

Might have to start a divorce thread.....

My recollection of that trip is a little fuzzy due to my complete sobriety during the duration of the trip.

For my final act of my companion pass year, I am going to take my wife and kids to Costa Rica.  Going over thanksgiving.  It's the later side of their transition from end of rainy season to beginning of their dry season.

Most importantly, we are going to stay where they have a eff ton of monkeys.  I love them.
Where in Costa Rica?

Pacific coast.  Going to stay in the Manuel Antonio national park area.  Best combination of lots of wildlife, easy/safe drive from San Jose, and beaches.

I am renting a car, so I wanted to be where gringos can get around easy.  You know I don't speak Spanish!
wife and I spent a week at the Sheraton Playa Conchal last June- I rented a "full size" SUV (Toyota Prado - basically a more truck like 4Runner) and it was almost $800 with over half that in insurance.

My wife got feed monkeys at the zip line place

I noticed that about the rentals.  I decided to go with a car instead of a truck, because they are so cheap relative to the trucks.  And, if we all die in a head on collision, at least we were together, ya know?

What other activities did you do that you'd recommend?

Guys, it is way cheaper to rent a car than an suv here as well, that isn't unique to costa rica

Do you and Mrs. Pete scuba? If so it is different than the Caribbean. Not as good of visibility and much bigger sea life. If you do not mind a 2 hr each way jeep ride there are some active volcanoes you can go to and hike up. We could go to the one  that was in play when were were there due to the border being closed. They nabbed a couple of ISIS guys trying to intermingle with Cuban refugees and closed the border to Nicaragua. The other volcano in Costa Rica was closed to vistors because it was too active and they thought it might fully erupt. :ohno:

The Zip Line we did was this one
http://www.congocanopy.com/en
Its about 5 miles or so up a gravel road that was a bit rough in spots so if you just get a little car I suggest doing the ATV tour with it.  We saw a couple of groups do it and it looked pretty fun.

We also drove to the waterfall near Bagaces.  It is very beautiful but it is kinda in the middle of nowhere and there was just a parking lot, some folks selling coconut water and couple of young guys offering to guide you to the top of the waterfall for a couple of bucks.

I also went fishing on a trip I set up thru the Sheraton.  Its not cheap but the pacific side of CR has some of the greatest offshore fishing in the world and it's pretty close.

I would love to take my kids and I think I would fly into San Jose, do 3 or 4 days in the rain forest doing rain forest and volcano stuff then drive over to the Pacific Coast for at least another 3 or 4 days.

I rent a giant SUV literally every week where I work, and I pay the exact same price as I would if I rented a little sedan.  Tho, maybe it is a great Kim carves post, in the way you probably mean, which is that it is untrue and stupid.

National Executive status a pretty nice perk. SUV for the mid size price. I'll take the suv every time.

When I was working in a field office for a major project, I had 290+ rental days in one year.  That status coupled with my old company's rental agreement meant I could take any car off the lot for the same cheap price.  I also accrued around 1.2 million hotel rewards points that same year.  I took a lot of vacations the next year...
