Scottsdale seems like a very nice place to live, if I were financially independent and did not have to work and just play golf every morning and ride my mountain bike every evening. Lots of places are like that though, where they are nice when you don't have to live like a normal human being every day.

stop trying to convince this guy to move to la.  arizona is the tops, he should move there.
Well, he did ask. But yeah, he should live in Arizona.

I think he's pretty set on moving to phoenix

I travel 80% of the year.  I do not want to live in Los Angeles, from my dealings, it is disgusting.  I like Arizona.

That's a lot of travel.  I empathize.  Do you travel by plane?  If so, I strongly recommend the following criteria for your search:

1.  Close a top 50 airport

2.  Within one time zone of where you expect to do 80% of your business (preferably same time zone)

3.  Cheap

4.  Close to family/friends

Everything else is vastly less important, if you travel that much.

I'd say live in a modest garden apartment as close to the airport as possible/tolerable. Sometimes that 60 or 101 traffic can get bad!

I obviously don't know your family situation, and I ASSUME you travel by plane, and that you do business on the West Coast, by looking at your list of cities.

I'd look at Portland, if I were you.

But seriously, I think you should consider Salt Lake. Delta hub, plus you're centrally located in your region. IMO it's much prettier than Phoenix, it's probably one of the most scenic cities in the country.

I think Arizona is a good choice if you're into body art and drugs.

i agree with slc.  very pretty.  phoenix would be fine for the frequent traveler as well.  or really for anyone who doesn't go outside in the summer.  arizona is an amazing state, phoenix just happens to be the worst place in the state (except for yuma, maybe).

really, for someone travelling 80% of the time, what does it matter?  anywhere there's an airport.

Hey JCiW/G, mich and sys are right about salt lake.  It's great.  Winter cold is much more tolerable than Kansas... very little wind and no extreme low temps.

If the answer is play golf, watch hockey, and eat mexican food then Phoenix is the best place in the world.

He listed off a pretty great selection of states and picked (at best) the second to worst one. Certainly "smells" like a joke to me, kc
