Low magnetic collar stay IQ question: Are the magnets for inside your shirt to pin the collar stay down or is the magnet on the collar stay so you can decorate that crap with all kinds of accessories?

Zara is good, its from Spain so all their clothes are made for thin, good-looking people.  Also well priced, its like a much cooler Gap.

I only have pants from there which may be too skinny for your liking.  Shirts should be a good fit off the rack.

Hi fashion experts, I'm looking for some inspiration. If you could start your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? Where would you shop?
where do you work, what do you do? price point?
I'm in grad school for the next 4-5 years. I don't have to teach, so there's no reason I can't dress casually. My price point is fairly modest, but I have some extra cash I want to spend on clothes...
Pretty sure there are some Jos. A Banks haters on here, but I would have started there. They have great clothes...everything discussed on here...good quality. NEVER buy anything at full retail price. They have crazy sales every other week and ridiculous sales once every month or two. (Buy 2, get 3 free is very common).

Hi fashion experts, I'm looking for some inspiration. If you could start your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? Where would you shop?

What look do you want to go for?

For me, I'd probably revolve my wardrobe around pants that fit well (non-jeans) and shoes that match.  Be more picky about what I buy.  Only get button-ups that are tailored (cheaper anyways).

First thing to figure out. Pay attention to what guys are wearing in movies and TV shows you watch. Browse GQ or Esquire online or on paper. Check out some street style blogs. Spend an afternoon someplace like the Plaza, just going into different stores and seeing what displays you like. A lot of the looks you'll see, especially in the mags or style blogs, will be more "extreme." Just use them to see what elements you *do* like. That will help you narrow down what stores you want to shop.

If all my clothes burned tomorrow, and I made just a little more, I would buy most of my business-wear staples at Brooks Brothers, with some trendier business/casual from Banana Republic, J. Crew, and Express.

Thanks. This is good advice.

Backpack.
This is also good advice.

A question for  tall people:
I'm kind of tall (6'2"), but pretty thin. So, large shirts are way too baggy, but medium shirts are too short. I've never had much luck finding Med-Tall shirts. Where do you guys shop?
Bring your clothes to a tailor. Not very expensive and you will look and feel great. (assuming you are good looking, otherwise you will just feel great).

brooks bros has reg., slim and super slim.  but, as a warning, their slim isn't very slim.  they also do tall sizes AND MOST IMPORTANTLY you can buy non-irons for not much more and you hang that crap right out of the dyer and it looks perfect sans-steamer
Wrinkle free is the only way to go. If you don't buy wrinkle free and you don't steam/iron/dry-clean, then you just as well wear your pajamas.

it was a running joke because an Arkansas fan told us he was going to be at the game in Jos. A Bank clothing and bigtime our faces.

Ahh, thank you for that. Nothing bigtime about Jos. A Banks. Guy was in grad school and asked what we would do different if starting our wardrobe over. I bought a bunch of cheap crap at that age and I would buy a bit better clothes. Jos A Banks is good place to start. It wears well and looks good imho. I don't have any personal need to bigtime anyone with my clothes, but I do buy nicer clothes now. I like the 90th %ile rule that someone (you?) mentioned earlier.

My folks used to give me Jos A Banks as gifts. My experience was that the shirts were cut huge (and differently than a lot of other makers) and tended to fray much sooner than my shirts from Lands End, Brooks Bros, and Polo. I haven't seen a JAB shirt on sale at a low enough price to buy. In this day and age when you can get much better prices on much better quality shirts online, there's no excuse to get a JAB shirt.

The suit and sportcoats they gave me have lasted okay. The shoulder pads are thicker than I'd like. I suppose if you're going to buy store brand at a department store, getting a Jos A Bank suit or sportcoat on a deep sale for about the same price would be okay.

The ties have lasted well, but at the price they charge they're nothing special.

Bring your clothes to a tailor. Not very expensive and you will look and feel great. (assuming you are good looking, otherwise you will just feel great).

Never done this.  Can you bring in anything within reason - t-shirts, button-ups, pants, jackets?
