I think I am going to become an every day sport coat guy soon.  have been considering it for awhile.  I think it's time.

You'll be like every other try hard fashionista that wears a sport coat with jeans every day. Might as well start wearing a fedora while you are at it.

Hi fashion experts, I'm looking for some inspiration. If you could start your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? Where would you shop?

I'm in grad school for the next 4-5 years. I don't have to teach, so there's no reason I can't dress casually. My price point is fairly modest, but I have some extra cash I want to spend on clothes...

What look do you want to go for?

For me, I'd probably revolve my wardrobe around pants that fit well (non-jeans) and shoes that match.  Be more picky about what I buy.  Only get button-ups that are tailored (cheaper anyways).

First thing to figure out. Pay attention to what guys are wearing in movies and TV shows you watch. Browse GQ or Esquire online or on paper. Check out some street style blogs. Spend an afternoon someplace like the Plaza, just going into different stores and seeing what displays you like. A lot of the looks you'll see, especially in the mags or style blogs, will be more "extreme." Just use them to see what elements you *do* like. That will help you narrow down what stores you want to shop.

If all my clothes burned tomorrow, and I made just a little more, I would buy most of my business-wear staples at Brooks Brothers, with some trendier business/casual from Banana Republic, J. Crew, and Express.

Thanks. This is good advice.

This is also good advice.

A question for  tall people:
I'm kind of tall (6'2"), but pretty thin. So, large shirts are way too baggy, but medium shirts are too short. I've never had much luck finding Med-Tall shirts. Where do you guys shop?

slimz' aforementioned express has slim-fit shirts.  You're gonna need a garment steamer, though.

banana does slim too.  another option is to have a tailor size the shirt.

brooks bros has reg., slim and super slim.  but, as a warning, their slim isn't very slim.  they also do tall sizes AND MOST IMPORTANTLY you can buy non-irons for not much more and you hang that crap right out of the dyer and it looks perfect sans-steamer

If you have a bit of money, Brooks Brothers Sport Shirts in Slim or Extra Slim are better options (in terms of fabric quality, fit, etc.). Express is fine, though. I'm 6'2" as well, and the brooks bros. shirts are fine in terms of length. I have a few ralph lauren custom-fit oxfords, as well; I like the way they fit my shoulders, and the fabric is great.

Yes, the extra-slim is your best option if you have a sub-34 waist.

I'm constantly perplexed by the number of guys I see wearing ties without collar stays, with their collars flying out all over the place. Makes me wonder if they aren't familiar with collar stays, or just forgot to put them in that morning.

No, don't.

I've always pictured this as something I will do when I turn 40.
