MTC should find more insider info from his super secret source and post more often.

I'll try, although I can't tell if that was legit or sarcasm.

$20 million dollars on a basketball facility.   That's a ton.  The NBA OKC franchise just built a state of the art basketball facility in downtown OKC for $15 million.   Duke spent $15 million, $20 million is more than Kentucky and Texas spent on theirs, I am pretty sure it's more than Indiana spent on the one they are building now, and it's about the same as Virginia Tech spent on theres and it's awesome.

In the current construction climate, the only way this is going to to be "half ass" is IF they only spend about $10 million.    If they spend all $20 million on the basketball facility in today's hyper aggressive, desperate construction bidding process . . . it's going to be one hell of a facility.

That being said. . . I won't hold my breath.

i hope they visit the Duke facility (which took 18 months to construct) to get ideas/concepts used in their design, it's incredible.

In other news, Currie let go of about six K-State athletic administrators yesterday. But carry on, nothing to see here. Just saving a few bucks. Money is tight, after all...  :jerk:

If they were in their roles for over a year, chances are high that they sucked at their jobs, so why should we be concerned or upset about this?

with steel prices what they are, the 20 mil will go a LOT further than it did 5 years ago too.

This is true. It's about half the price it was a year and a half ago. Not to mention contractor bidding is a good 2-3% down from where it was. My last project was built for half the price it would have been 2 years ago. HALF. Which is why it boggles my mind that more people aren't building.

My industry newsletter said that it is supposed to go back up next quarter.  Still the best time to build though.

We are bidding things tighter than ever before.  Def the best time to build anything.

Not surprised at all. It can only go up. If the design can get going fast enough, place the order of steel early and lock in a price.

Because the postseason ticket request form has the wrong dates on it for OKC games?

To me, the most impressive part of the Jack Trice renovations is going to be the floating light standard (or is it a concession window?) hovering above the upper deck.  ISU must be doing some pretty heady research into antigrav technology.

not to mention that the wind manages to blow both ways across the stadium at once

Observations about the suspended rectangle and flags blowing in opposite directions at the same time are elite observations, causing one to pay more attention to artist renderings.  Suspicious of a ku architecture grad (aka glorified draftsman) being involved here.

KU Grads and quality Arch/Const are unable to exist simultaneously.

Isn't ISU second in the Big 12(to KSU) in the program that spits out folks who manage this stuff?

Answer: yep.

Why outsource to a KU grad?

the chosen architect on this project should ease your concerns. Populous (formerly HOK) is probably the foremost sports architecture firm in the world. These guys don't cut corners or slop up half ass projects. with the ball in their court (pun intended) I'm supremely confident well be getting one of the most elite facilities in the country. with steel prices what they are, the 20 mil will go a LOT further than it did 5 years ago too.

Doesn't cost depend more on the Engineer and General Contractor bids?

I thought all architects did was design things that can't be built, and that the engineers job was to tell them how stupid they are

People built too much the last 5 years, there's nothing/no one to put in any of the buildings just completed (or incomplete), let alone fill a new building.

this should help explain why prices were high, and are now low

Well, maybe more accurately, our reaction to China.  But yes, domestic supply and demand analysis is ill advised.
