The committee will find the next Wisconsin or Tucky as opponent; add a bad whistle for good measure.
Everybody will be butt hurt over the KITN.

Or we could just rough ridin' win a game? Cats fans act like if we play a decent team in the tourney then we've been suffered some kind of moral injustice. We lost to LaSalle in the first round in an effective home game for Christ's sake. I will except no excuses if we're one and done again this year. I mean, there's probably no way that lack of postseason success ever tanks oscar, but I'm still going to act like it should, because we should have standards, goddammit.

I don't think it's crazy to think a school like K-State could have a couple sweet sixteen appearances each decade. Until we stopped trying to win at basketball for like two decades that would have been a conservative expectation. Basketball landscape has changed, so it's not as easy for us to have that rate of success, but it's not like some kind of pipe dream or something to expect a couple short runs every ten years..

I wonder how many schools have multiple sweet 16s over the last 10 years

38 teams. a handful that have made it twice in the last eleven years. So, essentially you'd have to have a top ~40 program. It would not be hard to field a top 40 basketball team consistently.

i was surprised Arizona is that high up there. but man, sean miller is the real deal.

in his career he's gotten to the sweet 16 twice with xavier and five (5!) times with arizona. four (4!) elite eights. amazing he's never cracked the final 4 barrier.

oh and he also has 7 conference 'ships in his last 11 seasons. that's elite.

Oklahoma doesn't even give a crap about hoops, and they've got three.

POWERCAT POSSE STYLE NERD POST ALERT

i went ahead and did elite 8 appearances also for the same 10 year period (2008-2017)

of the 35 teams who made the sweet 16 multiple times, 28 made it to the elite 8 at least once:

6 Kentucky, North Carolina
5 Florida, Kansas, Louisville
4 Michigan State
3 Arizona, Duke, Syracuse, UConn
2 Baylor, Butler, Gonzaga, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Villanova, Wisconsin, Xavier
1 Marquette, Memphis, Tennessee, UCLA, Virginia, West Virginia, Wichita State

the other 7 schools were skunked
0 for 3: Indiana, Purdue
0 for 2: Iowa State, Miami (FL), NC State, San Diego State, Stanford

6 schools turned their only sweet 16 appearance into an elite 8 appearance:

Davidson '08
Texas '08
Missouri '09
Pittsburgh '09
Kansas State '10
Dayton '14

2 schools turned their only sweet 16 appearance into a final four run:

VCU '11
South Carolina '17

I love this break down.. would be fun to do it with coaches. That would show what long term impact a coach has in a program. I'll be waiting for your report. :bwpopcorn:

This is very interesting. I was surprised by how successful Wisconsin, AZ, Baylor and OU have been.

Why would you be surprised by OU? They've had two national player of the year candidates in this stretch and have another this year.

Maybe because we have had a fair number of wins over them recently. Watching games on TV where their area is mostly empty. Like someone else mentioned, the perception that they don't care about being good at basketball.

Or Wisconsin for that matter. There was a like a 5 year period where they seemed to always be in the S16, and they make the champ game.

Outside of games vs KU, OSU, or maybe Texas their fans don't care, but they invest in their program.

final fours (2008-2017)

4 Kentucky, North Carolina
3 Michigan State, UConn
2 Butler, Duke, Kansas, Louisville, Syracuse, Villanova, Wisconsin
1 Florida, Gonzaga, Memphis, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, UCLA, VCU, West Virginia, Wichita State

if you want to use a 10 year span of tournament results to judge a program, maybe we can come up with some tiers

A++ tier (3+ final fours) 4 schools
A+ tier (2+ final fours) 11 schools
A tier (2+ elite eights) 21 schools
B+ tier (1+ final four) 23 schools
B tier (1+ elite eights) 28 schools
B- tier (2+ sweet sixteens) 35 schools
C tier (1+ sweet sixteen) 59 schools
Trash tier (no sweet sixteens) no idea how many, probably a crap ton like 292 or something

the Trash tier could probably be split up into schools that have made the tournament at least X number of times, and schools that have not, but that's more work and it doesn't matter

the number of schools in each tier is accurate for the current decade. they would fluctuate a bit from year to year

Agree with the trash tier designation.  I hope that no fans of legit programs would be satisfied with tournament appearances that end in the first weekend.
