Jack's dad sold some of his businesses to ADM in 1970.  He got a large chunk of ADM stock in the deal and was put on the BoD.  Jack got on the BoD in 1978.  When Jack retired from the BoD in 2004 he owned $238MM in ADM stock.

The Vanier family has now donated nearly $100 million dollars to K-State.   At veritable EMAW Mt. Rushmore of EMAW Elite Stud and Studettes.

To expand on the Vanier-ADM thing.  That stock has increased 90% to be worth $452MM this morning.  Since his retirement those 11.2MM shares have paid out just under $58MM in dividends.

Sorry if this seems stalkerish, this stuff is just interesting to me.

GFA, you are assuming that Jack settles for averages? I am guessing Jack laughs at averages. It is probably worth over $500 M today.

I'm not an expert on all this, but this was ADM common stock correct?  He would have been dividends the whole time he held the stock, even when he was on the board, correct? 

Plus don't they have other holdings, like land and ag related businesses?

I just looked at the stock price of 21.25 when he retired on Dec 2004 vs. $40.40 this morning.  That's all I looked at purely out of curiosity.  And yes, they own a lot of other stuff too.

I'm going to look at my Ahearn point calculator this morning to see how much I would have to donate/additional priority points needed to reach #1.  I'm going to look again in two weeks to see how much those values went up.

Not exactly. This was the money that was to come to KSU when Mary died. With everything going on they wanted to give now, so they undid the estate plan, gave the money to Jack and Donna to give now.

Because of how John had it tied up, they couldn't just do the $20MM for Athletics, they had to do the whole thing at the same time.

Say what you want about Bob Krause, but he's even working this since he and Mary got married.

Yeah, and then just kind of kicked back in his EMAW throne and let out a big breath and looked out across his kingdom.

A goEMAW Elite reminded me via text that historically K-State doesn't announce the lead gift on a capital project until at least 3/4's of the cost has been raised, so we're likely well on our way here. 

With this announcement, that means in the last 3 years K-State has raised at least $60 million straight up cash money to go towards facilities projects, probably more like $70 plus million.

That's some damn big bake sales and like a gajillion taters lining up to give $50 each.
