That's why there should be one or many early signing periods. It would protect all parties. If the school doesn't let the player sign, he ought to keep looking. If the player doesn't sign, the school can keep looking and "bump" the player of they find someone else.
If both parties are all in, then you know that up front when a formal offer is given and the player signs.
