I played ball at the rec with a guy named John Miller. He has a pretty great runner with a tear drop from inside of 10 feet. I would have loved it if he would have done it from behind the arc.

a guy played today that played like shitty white guy reggae (like Rebelution or whatever ERII likes) on his phone while he warmed up.

(he has shown up before, always wearing a sleeveless flannel shirt to warm up in)

We have a guy at our pickup games that I call "the complimenter".  He is always complimenting everyone on nice shots, moves, steals, etc.  Even the other team.  One time I got a steal on a pass that was going to him and as he was chasing me down the court he was like "aaaahhhhh, nice steal!" I said "thanks" right before I shot the layup but not sure if he heard me. I like it a lot and it helps to de-escalate any problems when a guy is telling everyone what a good job they are doing.

that reminds me, rebelution sleeveless flannel guy also shortened his complements in strange ways. I got a rebound and he said "nice re!" and someone made a nifty layup and he said "nice lay!" :dunno:

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

A rusty post a few back reminded me of this, but I don't think I've ever called a foul on someone else is a pickup basketball game.

ha ha! shirtless flannel guy also today had an interesting argument. He got hacked and didn't call it, so naturally everyone kept playing. When he acted surprised people were still playing, he was like "you slapped my arm! I don't need to call that!"

but seriously you need to call fouls or your teammates will get pissed at you (assuming it is a game where fouls are regularly committed and called)

I went to what I thought was just a pickup game at the local gym.  Turns out there are teams, refs, and scoreboard operator.  Played like I haven't played competitively in years (I haven't).  Up 3 points with 10 seconds left I saved the ball off a player's foot to get possession and ice the game at the line.  It almost felt like I redeemed my shitty play all night in that one moment.

I don't think there is any way for me to go play in a pickup bball game at this point.  I haven't played hoops since college.

Guess I will be sticking to pick up soccer and some tennis now that I have some people to play with now.

why not? I took a similar amount of time off. And I pretty much just sat on my ass.

Of course, tennis and soccer are great, too. (but soccer seems like it could eff up your joints way worse than hoops)

I last played organized competitive basketball in 5th grade.  I played a bit of intramurals in HS and college but mostly as a joke.  I played soccer during all of that time and in college.  My fundamental skill level with basketball just isn't worth it to make it worth my while vs. playing soccer or tennis.  I would go back and play middle school and high school hoops even if I was on the scrub teams if I could do it over.

I don't want to force my kids into anything, but I really hope that they don't look back and say that. I wish I would have golfed in HS.
I will pretty much let my kids try any sport for a season. I tell them, I don't care what you do, but you have to do something. It's pretty simple for dobberjr, he wants to try everything. It's dobberette that is a little awkward. She has Mrs. Gooch sized feet in the 4th grade...looks like a baby giraffee when she runs. I am guessing toddlerdobber will follow in his older brother's footprints with giving things a try.

I was told the lie that tennis is a lifetime sport and basketball isn't.  It is the opposite.  I am really glad I consistently played recreational soccer because it has been a really great social and rec activity, I just wish I would've kept up with basketball in a similar way to supplement the soccer in the winter.

I wish I had the confidence to play pick up soccer around Manhattan :(
I'll occasionally hoop at the rec with friends, but don't like full court until I get better cardio.

Go buy a ball. Kick it a few times. Roll it around with your feet. You'll get the hang of it. Then just play good defense and nobody will care if you are not scoring goals like dobberjr.

I had never played until jr started playing. Now, I love the pick up games of fathers vs. kids. It's one of the most enjoyable things I do.

I ball til I fall in all sports. Regardless of the shape I'm in. Only one way to get better. Saying I'll try pick up games after I _______ is dumb. Just do it. Get better. Make progress.

The only way to get in shape for full court basketball is to play full court basketball. Start with just a game or two, don't play too hard, and slowly build up your endurance.

And the not playing too hard is important. I see a lot of people who get hurt by trying to hustle like college jerrod Haase with grown up jerrod haase's body. It's not worth it.

So I recently moved and have a new gym. Nice place and all. No real complaints aside from the fact that nearly every pickup game turns into a fight or near fight. It's brutal. It's almost to the point that I hate playing there because I know two dudes will either fight or come close to fighting.

Yesterday, a grown man told another grown man that he would "bust out all of his teeth until you have to eat nothing but soup, bitch"

This isn't once or twice a week. There's an incident almost every day.

Something like that. Miami. I guess that's not technically "The South"

Maybe it's just my neighborhood. But, man, everyone wants to fight over moving screens or whether or not a dude traveled.

like, are they pretty boys?

today a new guy showed up and he could play but he was obviously was out of shape and was calling bullshit traveling and double dribble calls and he tried to call a double dribble on me to kill a fast break and I got pretty pissed. At one point I said, "JESUS CHRIST" and he said "don't bring Jesus into this" and I said something to the effect that "I know Jesus wouldn't have made that call because he was an honest man" or something like that. I wasn't going to like, fight though. Good times!

usually people who can play would never dream of calling a double dribble in a pick up game.  this character is an interesting study.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

I've never called double dribble or traveling*. *exception - there's one old guy that will pick up his dribble, pivot a while, then take two steps like a layup. He also will take a foul and then take like three steps and make the basket, like the foul gives him an excuse to take as many steps as he wants. It's a good play, I'll let him keep the ball but not the basket.

Ah, forgot another note about this guy I enjoyed. On the board for the game he just wrote "K". We're a friendly game, so after one of the games were like, what's your name, and he's like "Kevin, but actually it's 'Smooth K'", and someone's like, "oh, because of your moves on the court?", and he's like, "nah, I became 'Smooth K' driving a luxury tour bus".

Well, I enjoyed it happening more than I enjoy reading.
