Essentially Flyertalk / bar jukebox takeovers
« on: June 29, 2014, 08:43:58 AM »
what's the jukebox etiquette when at a bar? is it okay to play, like, seven songs in a row? is it unacceptable to play seven songs in a row by the same artist?

on touchtunes jukeboxes where you can pay an extra credit to "play song next," is it okay to do that for all of your songs (thus, jumping everyone ahead of you in the queue who didn't protect their selections by paying the premium?)

Essentially Flyertalk / how many states have you lived in?
« on: June 09, 2014, 07:56:48 PM »

i've only lived in three states so far.

Essentially Flyertalk / window seat question
« on: April 29, 2014, 10:14:33 AM »
when flying, is the person in the window seat the supreme ruler of the window shade? like, if you have the window seat, do you even bother asking your fellow passengers for their preference?

i could care less about the ksu hoops program. i didn't attend k-state for the sports. i went because of its great academic reputation and because a degree could help me achieve anything i wanted in life. like most proud k-state alums, i've been following kirk schulz's visionary k-state 2025 plan with great interest. a degree from a top 50 public research institution such as k-state would enhance my profile and take me to a level i never thought possible. (you too, probably).

but the negative publicity surrounding oscar weber seems like it could hurt our chances of gaining membership into this exclusive club. i've heard all the arguments for getting rid of him, but all these arguments focus on things like X's and O's, recruiting, and championships.

can we PLEASE make an academic hire? i have a short list if necessary.

Essentially Flyertalk / the accidental tip
« on: November 10, 2013, 09:18:10 PM »
so, let's say that you are at subway, and you make it a meal (chips and a drink), and the total comes out to $8.75, and you pay with two $5 bills. except, when you are handing over the $5 bills to the cashier, one of them falls out of your hand and into the tip jar, which is a square box like thingy that already has a few $1 bills in it.

now assume that the tip jar is kind of small. like, to retrieve it (if you wanted to), you might have to angle the jar to the side, or even tip it upside down.

what do you do? do you retrieve your accidental tip from the jar? do you ask the cashier to do it for you? do you leave it?

also, assume that you have no other money in your wallet. only a credit card.

Essentially Flyertalk / Cheez-It Snack Mix (ranked)
« on: October 03, 2013, 02:55:33 PM »
#1 - Cheez-It. A classic cracker with a great taste. Does just fine on its own. Also, made with real cheese.
#2 - Rice Balls. Some think that Rice Balls are BETTER than Cheez-It, which is ridiculous. Nobody would buy a box of just rice balls.
#3 - Bread slices. When grabbing a handful of Snack Mix, I will often put bread slices back in the box to preserve for later. Wish there were more.
#4 - Pretzel Twists. Three tiny bites, one to break off each symmetrical part. Not great, but decent enough.
#5 - Pretzel Stick. A horrendous waste. These do nothing for me.
#6 - Wheat squares. Taste like wood chips. These should be kicked out of the party. Invite more Bread Slices!

Essentially Flyertalk / "Oh, you can go in front of me ..."
« on: October 02, 2013, 01:48:53 PM »
When in the checkout line, if you have like 20 items, and the person behind you has two or three, will you let them in front of you? I have done it a few times, but not many, and try not to make a habit out of it.

If you say, "Yes, of course!" then where do you draw the line? What if 30 seconds later, another person with only one item gets in line behind you. Will you let them pass you, too?

Essentially Flyertalk / Tip the cable guy? (Immediate answer needed)
« on: September 30, 2013, 04:48:20 PM »
Cable guy is here. Moving into new place. He has to set up cable and Internet and has a bunch of tools on the ground. Looks like a 20-minute job.

Do I tip him? If so, how much. Also, I live in Vegas, which has its own set of tipping rules/expectations, which is why I'm a little uncertain. Thanks!

as a proud k-state alum, i demand excellence of our sports teams. excellence is defined by titles. LHC Bill Snyder, oscar weber, deb patterson, suzie fritz and now brad hill are all champions. but many of our school's coaches are not.

if i had my way, i'd run all the non-champion coaches out of town immediately.

but who should be first to go?

my vote is for steve bietau, the women's tennis coach. this guy totally sucks and is an embarrassment to our athletic program. since k-state joined the big 12, the women's tennis team has finished no better than 5th. that was back in 2000. the last five years: 12th, 8th, 7th, 6th and 7th.

the women's tennis team has finished above .500 in league play only twice in the last 10 years. that's horrible!

it's time to #firebietau  :shakesfist:

"3 over, 3 under."

What you need: Putter and golf ball.
How many players?: Two or more.
Where to play: Practice putting green (any golf course).
In a nutshell: It's a heads-up putting contest. You against your opponent. Every hole is a par 2. The game is decided when someone either shoots 3-under or 3-over par.
Rules you should know: Every hole should be at least 25 feet. Whoever has honors chooses the next hole. To decide initial honors, flip a coin.
Play for money? Obviously.
Strategy tidbit: If your opponent is 2-over, and you have a one-shot advantage with honors, choose the hardest possible putt available on the green.

Essentially Flyertalk / i don't like people who do this at stop signs
« on: April 23, 2013, 12:39:58 PM »
I was at the stop sign first. Like, totally first. I was sitting there all alone, for like 30 seconds, wanting to make a left turn, but was forced to wait - and wait - and wait - until traffic in front of me (going both directions) had finally cleared. After a minute, it begins to look like things are clearing up. I look to my left, and there are no cars coming! Yes!

Then, I look to my right, and ... what's this? Where did this car come from? And why did it pull up in front of the stop sign?

Now I can't see! Now I have to wait!

Again!

Essentially Flyertalk / mental tricks to improve chances for success
« on: April 15, 2013, 11:39:10 AM »
so, i was at the practice putting green the other day, and i was hitting missing several 20 to 30 foot putts, and eventually i became so frustrated with myself that i pulled out an old mental trick from my youth.

when i was a kid, i had this trick that i used frequently, and it involved putting my mom's life at risk. i would use this trick in lots of different situations - either to make a basket, to get a 90 on a test, to lift something really heavy ("If you can't find the strength to lift this gigantic box over your head, your mom will die!")

incredibly, the trick always seemed to work, at least in memory. putting my mom's life at risk made me a better shooter, a better student, and it made me stronger. through the years, i've kept using it, and to some extent, i've probably overused it. ("if you don't get to the post office before 5 p.m ...")

anyway, i used it again on the putting green, lined up three balls from 25 feet and said to myself, "if you don't make at least one of these, your mom is dead."

i missed them all, and three-putted two of them.

my mom turned 50 last month.  :frown:

Essentially Flyertalk / ordering / customer efficiency secrets
« on: April 05, 2013, 11:24:56 AM »
i have never worked at subway, but a subway employee once shared with me that he gets irritated when people order the type of sandwich they want before establishing the bread (wheat, white, parmesan, etc.) and size (six inch or foot long).

99 percent of people start with the type of sub they want, which doesn't make any sense. so now, i always start with, "i'll take honey oat ... foot long ..." and then, while he's cutting the bread, i'll say "oven-roasted chicken." efficiency!

Essentially Flyertalk / going places just to say you did
« on: March 31, 2013, 09:05:32 AM »
through the years, i've met plenty of people who go places or see things for the sole purpose of being able to say that they saw something or went somewhere. does anybody else do this?

i think it's kind of bizarre.

the only time i can remember doing this was when george bush came to kansas state several years ago. i had zero interest in seeing him, and only went so i could snap a photo and say, "I saw the sitting president speak!"

i've never done it. i always take the stairs.

i wish more would do the same, especially in a hotel with dozens of floors and if elevator already crowded.
