Essentially Flyertalk / Ken Stafford takes on ISIS
« on: March 06, 2015, 03:07:54 PM »
http://www.kmbc.com/news/kstate-renames-computer-network-isis-to-ksis/31648718

TOPEKA, Kan. —Kansas State University is renaming its computer network system to avoid associating with a terrorist group.

Chief Information Officer Ken Stafford said in a news release Thursday that the university will no longer use the abbreviation iSIS for its network handling enrollment, registration and financial aid. Stafford said many people have expressed concern over the network's name because the acronym is also used by the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The network will now be called KSIS.

Stafford said it will take considerable time and effort to change the name in all of the school's references and requested patience while the changes are made.

Several universities use the iSIS program for the integrated student information system, including the University of Colorado and Johns Hopkins University.

Kansas State Football / Re: KU football is hurting

"Friend" of mine who is a big KU supported/fan spoke with the KU AD during the Baylor bball game and asked him why they're not pouring $ into the stadium and upgrading facilities right now. His answer explains it all. He said, "Right now we're 9 out of 10 when it comes to football facilities in the big XII (uh, who is 10?). We can't afford to spend $150M on renovations and only jump to like 7 or 8 in that race. That would be a poor use of funds. When we rebuild (he said rebuild), it needs to put us in the top half of the conference" Also, he gave some excuse on that the campus has regulations of how tall and where they can build up the stadium in its current location. He said to dig down or do a complete tear down and rebuild would cost  a minimum of $250-300 given the space available - money they don't have now. Mentioned that U of Minn was what they were targeting and they spent about $300ish million on a 53K seat stadium.

So, they're just wait it out until someone donates another $100M to the football program. That is a solid plan.

Serious Question:
Has Auburn ever beaten a ranked non-conference team during the regular season?

I don't think they have...

*Update: They beat #7 Florida State in 1990 at Auburn.
So basically no player on their team has been alive since the last time the beat a non-conference ranked team and I still don't think it has ever happened on the road.

Warp speed would even get you out of our galaxy...

Good lord.  Only those dopes could lose money running a hospital

no kidding.  it's like 3 grand a night to stay in one of those rooms.  what are they spending it on?

fwiw, the hospital is a separate institution from the med school

FWIW - the hospital and med school are completely seperate entities. we give the med school $100M a yr to support their "mission"

Med school could go under, we'd be fine :)

pretty torn on this...

on one hand - I remember having class with some pretty stupid people, which made me feel super smarter than everyone else.
on the other hand - I remember being in class with some pretty stupid people, which made me feel super stupid for being at the same school with them,

Its basically a toss up unless you're a stupid, but 'they' probably don't understand the argument.

FWIW - I think the 'good' schools are good schools because of the students, not the professors/staff.

this is so far from the truth i dont even know where to begin

wow - kind of sad you don't think so...

Most schools teach the EXACT SAME CRAP. It's the students/cohorts you interact with that make the difference in both school and later in life. Sry, but its true.

TTHOTUC, Ben ji, et al-

This post on the Washington Post's Wonkblog is pretty much all you need. All the financial advice you'll ever need on a note card!

Full article below the pic.

Quote from: Wonkblog

Think managing your finances has to be complicated? Wonkblog contributor (and UC Chicago social scientist) Harold Pollack doesn't. After a talk with personal finance expert Helaine Olen, Pollack managed to write down pretty much everything you need to know on a 4x6 index card. And it would probably fit on a 3x5 index card if you really crammed (that last point, for instance, is probably not strictly necessary for managing your money). He explains:

The card came out of an RBC chat I had with Helaine Olen regarding what I view as the financial industry’s basic dilemma: The best investment advice fits on an index card. A commenter, Alex M, asked for the actual index card. Although I was originally speaking in metaphor, I grabbed a pen and one of my daughter's note cards, scribbled this out in maybe three minutes, snapped a picture with my iPhone, and the rest was history. (Here's the picture and post.)

Pollack's right. Follow these principles and you'll be in much, much, much better shape than most Americans — or most anyone. And all it will cost you is $2.20 for a pack of index cards — and you'll have 99 of them left over.
It's really hard to be poor (see Pollack's amazing interview on how being poor changes the way people think for more on that). But the lesson here is that once you have an income that you can live off of and save a little bit besides, managing your finances shouldn't be all that hard. The people making it complicated are often trying to make money off of you.

:kstategrad:

most mutual fund are crap. some arent, but you can balance risk just as good as a mutual fund on your own - without the fees associated and without paying taxes each yr on any gains.

Do the ku people not understand that many of the most famous and iconic stadiums in history (Michigan stadium, Death Valley, etc) are sunken in the ground? Also, the field at arrowhead goes down about two stories beneth ground level. Are you all dumb or just really have nothing else to grasp onto at this point?
