Would be great if Dave Dreiling bought it and did some super heel speech to the masses on top of the building and renamed it "Dreiling's".

What you're saying is...I can't buy 1500 rewards points worth of powercat ponchos? That'd be pretty disappointing.

Sports Authority straight canceled their rewards program and all the points people had in it as soon as they decided on their latest bankruptcy liquidation route.  I tried to use a $5 thing I still had on a can of sneaker cleaner and they said my thing was no good anymore, so I left their can on the counter for them to liquidate to someone else.

So I guess I'm saying, King, get in there ASAP and raise hell.

They had something on their site about reward points.

I bought about 4 textbooks in college so they never pissed me off, but I remember a bunch of students hating them.  I never knew if Varney's was worse than any other college town or just par for the course.

Par for the course.  I mean, every textbook is overpriced, it's not like Varney's was jacking up the cost.    While I was in school buying online was just beginning to emerge, especially the strong resale market.     I will miss browsing before home games, even though I really never bought much.

I worked at the K-State bookstore for a couple of years during college. I remember half my days during the run up to classes starting was spent removing all of the stickers and price tags from the mountains of used text books that would come in. We had to use industrial heat guns for some of them depending on the adhesive! Then, one year we started just putting these "K-State Bookstore" stickers over the competitor's stickers (usually Varney's). Then Varney's started using bigger stickers and we had to use even bigger stickers to cover those up. It got ridiculous to the point that we were using stickers about the size of a freaking Hallmark card just to cover up Varney's stupid stickers. Do kids even still buy text books these days? I figured they'd all be downloaded on their phones or tablets or whatever by now.

Do students still buy textbooks at the bookstore? I assumed it would be all Craigslist/Amazon now.

They should turn it back into an old fashioned single-screen movie theater but with dining and drinks and stuff. Would be fun.

The amount of investment to change the layout would seem insanely high.  I don't think margins on movie theaters are very good, although the high end ones with food and drink are probably better.

Do the Varney's owners own the building or whatever part their store took up?  If not, who does?  Are they trying to sell it or lease it?  Are their neighbors in the building that could preclude some ideas?

It wouldn't need to compete with Seth Child price-wise - it would be about the experience. Dining, bar, arcade, nice chairs. Bill Warren could make it work.

There is already a second movie theater being built in the mall.  This is the same reason a grocery store makes very little sense although a lot of people around town have suggested it.

With the wide sidewalks in that area, it obviously needs to be mixed use with condos upstairs and bar/restaurant street level with outdoor patio seating

Can they just chop it up?  The two story side can be one thing, wall off the single level side, and then just put something(s) in there?

If that were the case, I think you could do something cool in the two story section similar to Free State Brewery in Lawrence.  I'm not sure if the town wants another version of what Tallgrass put together, but I think that would be easiest.

Otherwise, just turn it into condos.

Their closing timeline might be due to the Courtyard by Marriott trying to get into Aggieville.  The hotel people presented a plan to the commission that would basically firebomb Aggieville parking.  If Varney's people sold to them, that lot would have more than enough space to do a lot of parking and the hotel.

It could fit there, but that's just an iconic building.  I don't see Marriott as someone that would take a space like that and renovate; wouldn't they tear down and build?

Marriott would 1000% tear down and build.  To be fair, their current proposal for the hotel is for the parking lot/car wash by Starbucks.  I just thought it may have been a convenient time for Varney's to throw in the towel though.  The hotel people say they will have parking for their guests plus 18 spaces for the public, but with employees and rooms with multiple cars there is no way they are adding 18 for the public.  Also, given 4 new hotels in the last 4 years, they would just be taking existing business from other hotels and would likely force the 4 Points to close.  If they are putting up the money for everything, fine, but no reason for the city to give any incentives.

I would hate to lose that iconic marquee but if something does come in and bring a viable parking solution with it, I would be pretty happy.  A parking solution that makes the 2 blocks of Moro a pedestrian only area would have me peeing on the marquee's ashes.  As new as it is, I would assume the Pie5 lease would be expensive to buyout if the building is coming down.

There are a number of businesses that have decided against opening in Aggieville due to a lack of parking.  I've been able to park two blocks away and walk when I want to get to something in Aggieville but there have also been plenty of nights I've decided to go somewhere else because I don't want to deal with it.  Also, the venue opening there along with a potential hotel will make parking much much worse.

A parking garage in Aggieville sounds like an ideal spot for Daris and the rest of RCPD to set up a check point at 2am every Friday and Saturday. It would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

How is this any different than aggieville/city park now
All cars would have to leave through one exit. Very different than it is now.

Needless to say, in no fun Manhattan, where Daris and fellow jackboots reign at the behest of no fun midwesterny white guys, something extremely lame will go into that spot.

Their closing timeline might be due to the Courtyard by Marriott trying to get into Aggieville.  The hotel people presented a plan to the commission that would basically firebomb Aggieville parking.  If Varney's people sold to them, that lot would have more than enough space to do a lot of parking and the hotel.
the last thing mhk needs is another hotel  :curse:

man, nothing says crown jewel of an entertainment district quite like a grocery store.

With the wide sidewalks in that area, it obviously needs to be mixed use with condos upstairs and bar/restaurant street level with outdoor patio seating

On the top 100 list of worst ideas (most probable) to replace Varney's, #1 would be a grocery store.

#2 Would be an urgent care clinic.

#3 Would be a H&R Block seasonal tax office location.

Aggieville basically already has one hotel.  The number of hotel rooms in Manhattan has already doubled in the past 4 years.

If someone wants to build one, it's their money.  The hotel will basically just siphon money from other hotels at this point though.  It won't help tax rev in the community so the city shouldn't give them any incentives.  Also, the proposal had the entrance on Bluemont so the traffic there would be a cluster.

I'm merely talking location.  The economics of a hotel investment are a different issue.  Assuming it makes $ sense for somebody, AV is an ideal location.

not sure why traffic would be an issue.  it wouldn't be the first street in the world to have two hotels.

Traffic wise there is no left turn into the hotel.  People are already annoyed at the Starbucks slowing traffic and causing minor accidents with their drive thru.

The hotel would be in a good position to make money.  It just wouldn't be in a good position to bring any more money into the city.

I'm just saying the city shouldn't incentivize it at all and it would make parking shittier.  I am not saying it won't be successful or that if investors want to build it, they shouldn't be allowed to.  But, to be clear, they are building a hotel across the street from a hotel in a city with plenty of hotels.

The biggest downside is the opportunity lost of doing something more worthwhile in prime Manhattan real estate.

As someone who travels to Manhattan about 10 times a year, Manhattan definitely needs more hotels, I don't care where they are. I'd prefer rooms on the north side (why the hell aren't they're hotels on the north side?) but I don't care where they are at this point.

S'YENRAV (known amongst college students as "The Rav") is Manhattan's newest and most exciting live music venue. Located in the heart of Aggieville in a converted former store that sold purple stuff, The Rav regularly features the following bands: Pomeroy. Energetic crowds of young and old alike have come to enjoy The Rav's historic charm combined with its hip modern amenities (words like "craft" and "artisan" appear on much of the decor inside). With future bookings rumored to include Eve6, The Rav is sure to be a gathering place for locals for years to come.

guys, I'm sorry.  a hotel in Manhattan's only entertainment district is a silly idea.  Since I don't live in MHK, I just didn't realize how negative of an impact such a development would have on townies.  For that matter, I didn't realize how much shopping/entertaining locals actually did in Manhattan.  must be a LOT.

I need to travel more, so I have better perspective on these things.

1)aggieville is not manhattan's only entertainment district.
2)there is already a hotel in aggieville and another one three blocks away.
3)nobody has said it's a "silly" idea. just that it's not beneficial for residents.
4)stop posting about manhattan related things. if I could ban you from posting on the topic altogether I would, but can't so I'm asking nicely.

What are your thoughts on the Campus Edge Aggieville MasterPlan from 2005?  Thanks in advance

More parking is a stupid idea, unless it includes trailer parking.  There's nowhere to park a trailer in Aggieville.  :curse:

can't you imagine dax sitting there just bitching away about the Carolina bbq not being Carolina enough.

I don't consider Eastern Carolina Style real bbq, so that's like, never going to happen, man
