Title: Cornhuskers
Post by: Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) on September 14, 2013, 11:24:10 AM

Some thoughts:

I bet they're so happy to be in the pisspants big ten.  They really needed to step down in competition to feel good again.

Kinda surprised they haven't fired the masochist.

Look forward to 5 years of their fans telling me how classy they are for whatever they did for the dead UCLA player.

Those uniforms are rough ridin' dreadful. Addidas is just brutal.

Tommie Frazier, who was inducted into the HOF and honored at halftime:

"After letting it sink in for about 4 hours I still struggling. It’s time to get rid of the defensive play caller, the Dc, lb dl and db coaches. I hate saying this but this crap is getting old. How in the hell do you not make adjustments or put your players in the position to compete? If this is what is going to happen for the remainder of the season, count me out. I don’t care if we lose a game but the way we are losing is just not what #Nebraska fans deserve. I have fought, bled, and cried over this program. I didn’t do all that for the program to become what it has today. Time for change! I will comment about the offense this week on Tommie’s X’s and O’s. Trust me you don’t want to miss it. #Huskers"

A few years ago you would hear stuff like "That's the worst home loss in 30 years for the Huskers" and now its like "That's the worst home loss since 2009" because they've consistently mediocre for about 11 seasons with a few moments of being slightly above average

As has been stated before, but needs to be stated again, they ran a 10-3 coach out-of-town on a rail because he had the audacity to lose at home to a pretty damn good and very talented K-State team.

How quickly they forgot that Tom Osborne inherited a really nice gig from Bob "pass the booze" Devaney and while Osborne won a lot of games he got rolled by OU regularly, lost numerous bowl games and it took him nearly 2 decades to win a national championship (there was even a very vocal contingent that wanted Osborne gone at certain points in the 80's).

Random facebook comments from 'sker fans:

I could see people buying tickets and not going to make seats empty way before the sellout streak ends. And unless Bo leaves on his own or had a losing season, he will be here next year.

The sellout streak will never end-- or maybe it will. After all, we are "fairweather fans."
Bo should be gone asap.

The sellout streak is simply "pony show" now, plenty of empty seats on a weekly basis, and if a game has 2 bad plays our stadium goes silent and clears out.....that was the "fair weather" reference

I hope everyone shows up and boo's Bo off the field.

We ARE fair-weather fans. It's ridiculous. We were spoiled in the 90's. I know this audio happened two years ago, but I wouldn't have doubted or thought twice if this would have happened after Saturday's game. We did go quiet. So did the team. We hired Bo BECAUSE he had fire. We hired him to fix the defense (still waiting), but he runs a clean program and grades are up. There are many other schools that'd happily trade. When I was in school and Callahan was HC, there were thousands of empty student section seats. I haven't seen anything close to that since Bo's arrival. We aren't forgiving at all. We root for the visiting team more than we stand behind our own players or coaches.

Bo thinks we are fair weather fans if we leave at half time. Does that make our defense a fairweather defense?

Every program that has a passionate fan base has fair-weather fans. Husker fans expect perfection, especially when the head coach gets paid millions. Don't forget though that the same fans that were hugely disappointed in the game Saturday were still very classy to UCLA. We are still the best fans in college football.

I blame the O as much as I blame the D. 10 three-and-outs in a row? It was a comedy of errors. I blame coaches and players for the loss, but it was a loss. Yes, we've seen this story before. Yes I'm upset about it. Yes, I had hoped we'd be better. What is complaining going to do about it? We vent constantly about it. Think the players and coaches are throwing in the towel? This is just poor timing for Bo and for a hurt fan base. If this was posted after a big win few would care. We'd look back and agree with what he's saying. He's said for years he hears more "feedback" from Husker fans than Sooner fans and Tiger fans put together.

Ten three and outs in a row? Wow. Only thing Bo can do is win...win in November specifically

That many 3 and outs is as bad as turnovers, especially for a young defense

And against that wind we couldn't flip the field. I'm not trying to find excuses. We had the team, and the scheme to beat them. We proved that. Didn't manage the game like we should have. Didn't execute....oh man...I just went all Bo right there. Now I need to cuss at some people.

I agree jarred, but nothing changes the fact Bo is arrogant and stubborn and ticking lots of fans off.

Didnt execute? Really?

Good. Don't like the aggression towards refs, but I'm fine with the rest.

I am a high school football coach. I know for a fact that after games, particularly hotly contested games, a coach can be emotionally charged. In my last season as a head coach we lost a 4 OT game on a poor call from an official. I am certainly glad that when I was dissecting that game with my staff and my closest friends that there was not a hot mic in the room. I am certain that I would have made Bo blush with my level of frustration. Be honest....it happens to all of us. Someone cuts you off in traffic; you have an argument with a sibling, parent, spouse; you get frustrated with something at work. Everyone has been to the point where we lose control. The guy works in a thankless job. If we win, the fans criticize the margin of victory. The newspaper guys are grading his team in the Sunday paper based on their performance. Everything he does is analyzed, criticized, and dissected by the "experts."

It is to the point where I have to restrain myself when I go to games. The last game I went to I was fortunate to sit next to a 50 some year old man who complained about every play that Beck called. I asked him if he had ever coached and he finally got quiet. It is definitely not as easy as it looks. I can only imagine how fast the college game moves. I have a hard time tracking my players in a 9th grade game. And don't even get me started on the POS who held on to this recording until there was a game that finally puts them over the edge. Unless I have a name of someone who Bo can question or address.....there is no credibility for me. Be a man and take responsibility for your hack job. I want to know why they waited for 2 years to release this....interesting.

Preach!!

Make a trade Ferentz for Pelini

November does scare me.

As an outsider I find this all extremely entertaining

"We root for the visiting team more than we stand behind our own players or coaches."

That couldn't be further from the truth. I have yet to hear of anyone not stand behind the players (except maybe Martinez). But I agree people aren't standing behind Bo. The ones who are are the ones who are okay with 2 blowout losses a year and 9-4 seasons.

Jack Hoffmans dad on the radio today said Jack was upset during the game when fans were yelling at the players and coaches because they werent just football players but also his friends. Im frustrated too, but we need to keep things in perspective

I'm exaggerating to make a point, just as you do when you insinuate I'm okay with 2 blowout losses a year and 9-4 seasons. We are acting childish.
I'm not happy he said it, but given what happened that day (half the crowd did leave), I think his temper tantrum had plenty of truth in it. We just don't like to hear it.

Mom, that is really, really great perspective. Thank you

Why are husker fans panicking. Bo has a winning record since Bo took over. Need to quit reminiscing abt the 70's 80's and 90's. jst off that alone, Osborne would have been fired back in the day. It took h forever to win the big games. As far as this weekend, the better team won. I tld everyone NU wld prbly lose 38-17.

What Bo said in that Deadspin clip was true. I knw he can't wait to get out of here and go coach in the SEC again where he can coach top athletes on defense.

Can't say I am in any way offended by what he said seeing as how I had a bit of a come to Jesus with a friend Saturday. I sure as sam snead would know better than to say it as a HC though. My buddy told me after the game he was done going to games and done watching. My response: Good, this team is better off with an empty seat than your sorry ass moping around feeling sorry for yourself. The sellout streak can end and you can blame it on Bo, but deep down you will know that it was because your sorry ass couldn't get over yourself and stand behind the kids who put on the big red N and bust their butts for your entertainment. It's not about Bo, it's about you feeling sorry for yourself. I then called him a quitter, we had another round on me and hugged it out and he left. I still think he's a quitter.

I'm just a fan, certainly gotta know better when you're a person of substance. I don't know how the person doing the leaking can sleep at night, big time weasel.

I'm confident Eichorst will not go into freak out fan meltdown mode and handle this professionally. Tough position for a brand new AD. Might not be a bad time for a TO cameo appearance.

I miss nub fans, never check their boards much since they left.

From BO

I want to sincerely apologize for my comments from two years ago which became public today. I take full responsibility for these comments. They were spoken in a private room following the Ohio State game. I was venting following a series of emotional events which led to this moment. That being said, these comments are in no way indicative of my true feelings. I love it here in Nebraska and feel fortunate to be associated with such a great University and fan base. I again apologize to anyone whom I have offended.

About 35 minutes after we published Pelini's rant, we heard from a different source who asked us not to disclose his name. This second source—who made it clear he is not the same person as our original source—told us he had learned a recording of Pelini's rant may have been out there back on Oct. 10, 2011, just two days after it was recorded. The second source said he first heard about it from someone who had talked to someone "within NRG media." About a year ago, our second source said, he was given a redacted transcript of what Pelini said on the the recording, which he shared with us:

NRG media is a media conglomo company in Cedar Rapids, IA

Really, all Petrino did was have an affair and wreck a motorcycle. That hardly makes him the devil. It doesn't even make him any worse than the vast majority of head coaches out there. It just makes him bad at driving motorcycles.

Iowa State could hire Petrino and be competing for a Big 12 title in 2017, assuming no better (any other BCS program really) program comes along to offer him a job before then.

what if it was greg

The emails to deadspin sort of eliminate that possibility. It appears to be some dude from the production company that UNL uses/used.

Really it could be anyone.  Like what if some guy involved with the sports radio station there went to a huskerPAK and drunkenly started telling stories of what happened and just giving away stuff that could make everyone look like crap later if the PAK guests decided to put it out there when they were mad about something?

(it's @fanning)

About 35 minutes after we published Pelini's rant, we heard from a different source who asked us not to disclose his name. This second source—who made it clear he is not the same person as our original source—told us he had learned a recording of Pelini's rant may have been out there back on Oct. 10, 2011, just two days after it was recorded. The second source said he first heard about it from someone who had talked to someone "within NRG media." About a year ago, our second source said, he was given a redacted transcript of what Pelini said on the the recording, which he shared with us:

NRG media is a media conglomo company in Cedar Rapids, IA

 :surprised:

Richard says: I’m 50 years old and strictly from a fans point of view if I had a wish, I would put us back in the Big 12 in a second.

Trading road trips to Purdue and Illinois for all the days trips I made to Kansas and KState, no thank you. I won’t drive 10 hrs for a road trip. Michigan and Ohio State do not have the same feelings that I had playing Oklahoma and even Texas. Adding Maryland and Rutgers, I doubt any Husker fan cares about that.

I find myself watching other Big 12 games on TV and I could care less about other Big 10 games. I have more apathy for Husker fb than I have ever had in my lifetime, and joining the Big 10 is the major reason for it.

For now it’s the dumbing down of “N” FB. The BIG is a good place for this program to retrograde while it continues to idle in neutral.
I feel like the Big 10 is a novelty that is wearing off. It sounded good in the beginning to make road trips to Michigan and Ohio State and now that the new factor has worn off its time to go back to the Big 12.

Bottom line is I think those that want to go back to the Big 12 are feeling a sense of apathy setting in for the Nebraska fan base. They may cite 11 am games, lack of rivalries, travel distances, recruiting, etc. I wrap all those reasons for anti-Big 10 and lump it all into one issue and its the apathy I feel setting in for Nebraska fans (or at least me).

Do I wish we were still in the Big 12? Well, let me put it this way… I wish the conference was stable enough and unified enough not to be forced to make such a move. Right now we are just another team in the Big 10. OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin are the darlings right now, and certainly that has something to do with our performance on the field. But, would we have been the 11am game or 11:30 four times by now? I don’t think so.

To me that’s a sign of where we rank right now with the Big 10 powers that be. We were a leader in carrying the Big 12 brand… even in losing. It’s not the case in the Big 10, but winning will help that.

I do miss the old friends in the Big 12. I think our fans do as well. There was no real excitement for the Illinois game, unlike if Iowa State rolled into town with similar circumstances. I was at Purdue, and I’ll compare it to KU. However, KU was always a bit of a party. KU was excited to see us, we were excited to be there. Purdue was a bore.

Bob says: Guess I was in the minority wondering what all the high fivin’ was about when NU left the Big 12 for the Big 10. I guess the desire to get away from Texas was so great that everyone forgot that we made fun of Big 10 football back then.

I had Big 10 fatigue last year when our ABC regional coverage gave us some Michigan St-Indiana match up rather than Kansas St-Texas. Most of Big 10 football makes my eyes bleed.

How long before it gets old to drive to some crappy Big 10 game that is 12 hours away rather than the old familiar crappy games in the Big 12 that were only 4 hours away.

Gotta hand to Osborne though, trading in membership from the worst division in a BCS conference to the NEW worst division in a BCS conference. Always nice to be able to brag about how many “championship” games you played in. All the while knowing full well that fans will pay to watch it no matter what.

It's not like Carl was performing on the field. FAU easily could have wanted him gone anyway and just used the pot party as an excuse to not pay his buyout.

I don't think FAU has those types of expectations out of their 1 1/2 yr tenured coach

Visited HuskerBoard to see how those poor losers responded to the Cats kicking the ass of their fellow conference mate. I can report Corn fans seem to have mostly worked through the requisite seven emotional stages about the death of their program. Sure there's still some denial and anger, but for the most part they've arrived at the acceptance phase -- they suck and their conference sucks.
They could have spared us so much drama had they been able to get there earlier without the bargaining stage that landed them in the big 10.

Probably because there was a time when they were college football royalty; 70s through the 90s when the Big 12 formed. They know they will never be a program like that again. The Nebraska fan always had a chip on their shoulder, but the 90's run of 3 titles in 4 years altered their perception of their place in the college football landscape. In part I can't blame them after a run like that.

It's their way of making excuses for why they started to suck.  Partial qualifiers, blah, blah, blah, Big 12 Championship game location blah, blah, blah Big 12 office location blah blah blah.  They never replaced Tom and they needed someone to blame - Texas was a convenient excuse.

Fun fact:  during Mack's tenure (since '98) Texas won the exact same amount of Big 12 Championships (2) as NU did during their time in the Big 12......which is the same number as KSU has won.

Oh, it was a fantastic run, even outside those 4 years.  From '80-'99, they won (or shared) a conf title 13 times.  13 out of 20 years they were conf champions, with 3 Natty's.......then from '00 - through present.....ZERO.  Nothing.

They'll make good money in the BiG once they become a full member.

I maybe luke here, but is it true that Cornhole was passed over by the BiG for Michigan for the BWW bowl?

If so, what has changed?   The whined and pissed and moaned about the Big 12, yet on almost every single issue they voted in lockstep with Texas.   They moaned about the PQ vote in the early stages of the Big 12, does the BiG allow PQ's?

It was pretty hilarious watching Texas V-Ball beat them in their home arena in the NCAA V-ball tourney.

Coaching career

Prior to finishing his first degree, Pelini began his coaching career with a two-year stint beginning in 1987 as an assistant at his alma mater, Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown.

The following year, 1989, Pelini completed his bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Youngstown State University, and later in the same year was brought aboard the staff at Kansas State University by LHC Bill Snyder as a Graduate Assistant. Two years later he moved up from Graduate Assistant to a position on staff as a Restricted Earnings Coach, while he simultaneously completed his Master's Degree in Journalism at Kansas State. Coincidentally, Pelini's last year on the Kansas State coaching staff was also the first year future fellow Nebraska Assistant Mike Ekeler (Now Co-Defensive Coordinator at the Indiana University) played for the same team.
