Rescue a mutt from wayside waifs. You can get a cute ass dog for pretty cheap. That's what I did.

No idea what she is. The mother was a pregnant stray. 28 pounds, while pregnant, and now she's like 50 lbs. Probably some kind of rottweiler/beagle rape action.

I have two English Bulldogs and they are amazing.  They fit all of your criteria except they do shed.  They do not drool.  They are the cuddliest dogs I've ever encountered.  They never bark or are aggressive and they love people.  They were super easy to potty train and also to sit and to shake and to lay down.  They mind very well.  They also like to play, but only as much as you want and if not then they are perfectly happy to sleep or chew a bone.  They are also hilarious.  Provide a great deal of entertainment just being themselves.  They wrestle each other.  I would not call them smart, but that's part of why they are adorable.

100% agree.  My dad is a vet at the Humane Society in KC, he says they have every kind of dog imaginable available for adoption. Not sure where you're located but go to a shelter, you can walk/play with/look at all the available dogs. Take your family members and make sure it gets along with all of them.

Just picked up this stud from the Humane Society a couple months ago.  :D

Ours haven't had any health issues thus far and all dogs die before you generally speaking.  If you're worried about a dog dying then you shouldn't get one at all.  It's part of the setup.  You do your best to give them a great life, enjoy their company and then they die.  Then you repeat if you're not a pussy.

Per your specifications:
1. Standard schnauzer
2. Cocker spaniel
3. Novia Scotia Duck Tolling Retreiver
4. Daschund

This site, http://dogtime.com/matchup (http://dogtime.com/matchup), has a quiz that "tells" you your perfect match.

I judge people who buy dogs from breeders when there are hundreds at the pound.

When I choose a pooch, I usually pick the dog sitting quietly in the back watching the other barking dogs crowd around the front of the cage.

They'll tell you they do, but there is no way to be sure with rescues. You'll get a pretty good idea what they are based on physical characteristics and mannerisms. You can pay to have a vet test it, but the results will probably come back "mixed breed"

No, most of the time it's just a best guess. It gets pretty hard to determine the mix when its mutts on mutts on mutts on mutts.

My advice would be to adopt a dog that is a bit older (1-3 years) so you know for sure what size it will be.  You could do DNA testing to determine the exact breed I guess if you really wanted.

I have strongly considered an english bulldog. But my family takes pretty long walks in the summer and I don't know if they would like that. I read they get heat stroke easily.

One of ours loves walks and the other hates them.  The male is larger and longer limbed though.  The female is a short stack.  She's just not built for it.  I wouldn't take either out for one if it were excessively hot.  I wouldn't do that to any dog though.  Seems mean.  All dogs struggle with high temperatures particularly when coupled with physical exertion.  They are perfectly fine hanging out in their crates at home having a chew or sleeping in the AC while you do your long hot walk.

If near KC, check out Safe Harbor.  They are a rescue but have some deal(or did when I got my bassett) with the Lansing prison that has a program where certain prisoners handle/train a dog each for like 6 months before they put them up to be adopted.  They sell it as each dog is trained to do basic commands and is handled for extended periods of time rather than just sitting in a cage and getting walked a couple times a day in a pen out back.

Also, the adoption fee was like $50 and they didn't have some super nazi-like application you have to be approved through.

When we first started looking for a dog, we looked at the local KCK rescue and were turned away because I told them I had a big fully fenced back yard and that the dog wouldn't be crate trained.  How insane is that?

Anyway, I have had labs, lab mixes, a couple dalmatians, a couple britneys, and a german shep and the basset is by far the best dog I have owned.  Very smart, very good with kids, really likes attention, really content to just hang out and/or sleep.  The one issue she has is that she is stubborn and if she is in the middle of something she likes, she will ignore our calls for a little while.

Exactly.

Some really dumb ppl out there.

The shelter we went with basically took our info from me and made me sign something saying that if I ever decide I don't want the dog, I have to give it back to them rather than someone else.

The Humane Society on the other hand would rather keep a dog than give it to someone willing to take it and give it a big back yard to play in.  I mean, what?

Let me preface this by saying I have only been around 5 of these before in my life.  That said, if I had to pick one dog to never ever ever ever be around again, it would be a Boston.

Horribly behaved.

The last three of the five I mentioned above are dogs I am around quite often currently.  They are nasty animals.  Constantly jumping on ppl, constantly picking fights with other animals, constantly throwing up.  I hate them, and I am a dog person.

It's not a training issue either.  The ppl that have these three all have other breeds too that are perfectly well behaved normal animals that don't do what their Boston counterparts do.

Horrible creatures.

I found my dog at the dumpster in Aggieville Burger King. Some lab/pit/greyhound mix. Pretty much the best dog ever, learned commands quick, nice to everyone, no barking(except for the doorbell), although it needs to run a lot.

I don't have much tips other than that, but the Burger King dumpster is 1 for 1.

I dought a viszla could get to be much over 50 lbs.  Would have to be fat to do that, IMO.  But the lab could take it over 50lbs for sure.  I've been around quite a few and they make great pets.  I don't prefer them from a hunting standpoint but they are nice dogs for sure.  Would be a shame though (IMO) to own a hunting dog and not take it hunting.

I've never seen a vizsla over 50 lbs and have been around a dozen or so.  Most were 40 to 50 pounds with a few under 40.  Some were litter mates, most weren't.  Granted all were in good shape as hunting dogs.  Americans generally let their dogs get pretty fat so I don't doubt the link.  I jsut don't think a healthy vizsla should ever get to be more than 50lbs.  That's two ribs showing.  YMMV.

My family has had our beagle for ~12 years now. He is great. We spent a bit of time training him, but once he was through his puppy years it has been a cake walk. Doesn't bark, very well house-trained (only accidents are when he gets sick), and he loves everyone.

It looks cute, but I'm not so sure that it isn't thinking about eating your baby right there.  It has a very "Who the eff does this guy think he is?" feel to it.

The baby bosses him so hard now.  Just goes up and slaps him around, hugs him and then pushes him away.  Makes mocking growling noises at him.  Poor dog.

Anyway, get a dog from a shelter.

My family has had our beagle for ~12 years now. He is great. We spent a bit of time training him, but once he was through his puppy years it has been a cake walk. Doesn't bark, very well house-trained (only accidents are when he gets sick), and he loves everyone.

Strongly considering trying to adopt a beagle or beagle mix.

beagles are hard as crap to train though right?

I have a 12 lb pocket beagle.

I don't recommend beagles.  It's common for beagles to have horrible teeth (causes the worst breath you can imagine) and seizures.  Plus beagles can be very loud.

We adopted our now 6 yr old beagle when he was 7 months old.  He marks everywhere (even though he is potty trained, he has rotten teeth (have had 6 pulled and thinking about pulling them all), and he has seizures every once in awhile.

Other beagle and pocket beagle owners I have had conversations with have agreed that they will never own another beagle.

My yellow lab is a badass though.  STUD

I wouldn't say that is the case. They may be more difficult than other breeds, but most people don't have the experience/ don't put in the effort to train them properly.

Beagles are very food oriented. It's pretty easy to train them using treats as a reward for proper behavior. The biggest issue is the shedding. Tri-colored hairs are a bitch.

I judge you for so consistently being a dumbass when you post here.

Bread is an bad person.

People in college should not own a dog, 1 of 2 things will happend.

1. The dog will spend all day in its crate and crap all over it and be full of energy when it is finally let out.

2. The dog will spend all day in the house and tear everything up because you and all your roomates spend all day in class and all night at the bars.

Roomate got a puppy in college and it lasted about 2 years before it was so screwed in the head from never getting enough attention that it was sent to his uncles farm.

Weight: 48.5 - 66 lbs.

http://puppydogweb.com/caninebreeds/vizsla.htm (http://puppydogweb.com/caninebreeds/vizsla.htm)

This website says you don't know crap.

YMMV.

I think I'm going to go with the experts at puppydogweb.com and not your eyeball judgments.  Everybody get a load of this guy, rough ridin' digital scale eyes accurate to a tenth of a pound!  Hey emo, the carnival just called and it wants you to work at it! lol

my dad's german shorthair was the most devilish creature i've ever known.  she didn't get nearly that big, but she also could run for 14 hours straight and still have energy left over.  had to give her to a guy on a farm so she could run all day because she was destructive as hell.

It's much easier if you have a bitch you want to breed.  In the bird dog world stud fees might only be $600 or so.  But in your case you'd probably have to find some other yahoo like yourself and convince him your male is worth breeding to.

iirc you live in cali?  i'd do some googling on cali bc breeders and see if you could get something worked out that way

pit bulls, the truck nuts of the dog world

If you're talking about the horribly mutated mutt "pitbulls" like this, I agree: (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmedia.salon.com%2F2013%2F02%2Fshutterstock_62858089.jpg&hash=fe043fdb46557ee72855033a02b8a400c38c4b9c)

I'd probably get a dog like this: (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dogbreedinfo.com%2Fimages25%2FAmericanPitbullTerrierBlueNoseDogsGeorgiaSueCaine2.jpg&hash=14adce3754b9fe7860a3f88ed0ebbdfd0c6a0c4b)

has nothing to do with what they look like

It absolutely does. Guys who want to look tough aren't going to get a pure bred APBT, because they look like labradors. They're going to get something they can put on a chain and tell themselves how badass they look with their tough dog.

Mine can like smell birds I want to eat and then stop just before they fly away.  Then after I shoot one he runs over and picks it up and boxes out the other dogs that want the bird.  Then he brings it to me.

Weight: 48.5 - 66 lbs.

http://puppydogweb.com/caninebreeds/vizsla.htm (http://puppydogweb.com/caninebreeds/vizsla.htm)

This website says you don't know crap.

YMMV.

I think I'm going to go with the experts at puppydogweb.com and not your eyeball judgments.  Everybody get a load of this guy, rough ridin' digital scale eyes accurate to a tenth of a pound!  Hey emo, the carnival just called and it wants you to work at it! lol

I used to have a Vizsla.  He was very lean @ 60 lbs, so we targeted 61-62 lbs.  Vet agreed.  However, he was just a bigger dog than other vizslas I had seen.

Great dog.  Great with kids.  But they need to run regularly.  Don't ever get one if you can't let it.

Haven't heard him make a single noise yet.  Except for a little whimper when I put him in his kennel last night.  Slept all the way through the night and then went straight to the door in the morning  :D, went outside and pooped :D, and then came back inside and pooped again  :frown:.

What kind should I get?

Parameters:
Small to Medium sized
Good with kids
Likes to snuggle
Pretty short hair/not too shaggy
Not too much shedding
Not too hyper/likes to play but also likes to sleep
Doesn't bark much
Easily trained/Smart
Does not drool a lot

Sounds like you're looking for a cat.

Had the dog for 2 weeks.  Gave it back to the original owner.  Got a cat.
