Does anybody else have to deal with this? If so, how do you deal with it?
I had a neighbor show up at my door yesterday to tell me that my yard wasn't green enough and that I was driving his property value down. I told him he should go grow cucumbers and eff himself. Did I handle this correctly, or should I have done something different?
Thanks.
-
you didn't really say that and if you did you're a dumbass. one of the few things men have in this world is their lawn, make it rough ridin' nice. do it. your neighbor was right. /thread
-
fescue or blue grass?
-
I would just reply with something like, "Yeah, well then I want you to replace your shingles."
-
fescue or blue grass?
I don't even know. I rent. I'll be damned if I'm going to worry about the value of a property I don't even own.

My neighbor is a dumbass. This isn't the first time I've spoken to him. His yard isn't even that nice, and if he wants to tell his neighbors how to manage their homes, he should move somewhere with an HOA.

Surely he knows that your joint is a rental. What a dumbass.
Also, some Fescue is still dormant.

FWIW, living in a HOA is essentially admitting you're living in a middle class trailer park.

How big is your back yard? Are there many utilities back there? Do you own a shovel? Do you own a gun or do you know how to choke some one out, maybe Trim will help.

If you're so worried that your neighbors are the type of people who will create neighborhood eyesores that you agree to give up property rights to a HOA, you're essentially admitting you live in an area that is in no way exclusive. It's middle class people pretending to be upper class. Upper class people don't worry about crap like that because they live in places that Redneck Joe could never afford/want to live.
-
My hood has a HOA. I agree it's basically blood in the streets gang warfare around here. Hopefully some day I can get out.

LOL at you for thinking that rich don't deal with HOAs. Rich neighborhood HOA's are damn near police states.
When you get a job, ask your boss about his HOA(assuming you aren't going to be working in a hayseed-oriented industry).

I have a nicer house than my boss :dunno:
-
do you live, like, on a farm?
-
double wide?
-
Go buy some fertilizer for your lawn. Don't worry about what kind because you don't give a crap anyway and it would be better if you bought the wrong kind. Put the spreader on a high number so it comes out nice and heavy. Make sure that when you fertilize the fertilizer goes in his lawn too. When your lawn starts to burn up and turn yellow in a couple of days be sure to practice the "man, I must have over fertilized" look. Use this look when he comes over bitching that your lawn is yellow. Tell him that you tried to do what he wanted. He won't bug you again.
-
or burn his house down with him in it

Nope, a few acres just outside the city limits.

Indeed. The crop of bluegrass has already been cut twice this year.

HOA's aren't a question of being rich or poor, it's a question of middle class vs. upper class. This is probably lost on a board with such low class inhabitants though.

the topic at hand is NOSY NEIGHBORS, not where wildcat06 lives ok
i swear sometimes i just don't know what to do about this place

Name the absolute nicest, highest end, neighborhood in your city. They have an HOA. Guarantee.

I had a nosy neighbor that tried to put up a camera aimed at our garage! I told her to take it down or I'd call the cops. She didn't, so I called the cops and she took it down. Then, she started calling the cops on our dog who slept INSIDE every single night. So, the cops told us to file a complaint against her. Then one day, my dog was in the backyard....and then she wasn't. Have never seen the dog since. We moved promptly.

When ever my wife and I get in the hot tub at night, my neighbor immediately goes into his back yard and around his back fence(next to our back fence) where he is hidden in the dark but has a full view of my back yard*.
*do not live next to Fitz.

HOA's are the devils spawn. Often it's not the association that's the problem. It's usually the property management companies are run by morons.
-
anybody in here know 06wildcat? he left his barn door open, the animals are getting out.

HOA sound bad until you visit a neighborhood without them. My HOA is pretty hands off, but I don't have to deal with people parking their cars in the lawn, 1e6 gnomes and flamingos spicing up the front, or 10 bags of trash by the back porch.

If your HOA has rules in it about the height of your grass, where your vehicle can be parked, what color you can paint your house etc. You live in a middle class trailer park.
I realize that the definition of upper class is quite different in Kansas than it is back east, but I actually know people that are appalled at the thought of living among people for which such rules would be though necessary.

once you get to a certain level, you are splitting hairs, bro. If you are trying to make this about the Kennedy Compound, or some crap you are just twisting the subject. You find one group of "upper class" people who live in close proximity of each other and I will show you an HOA that gives more than a crap about what goes down in their neighborhood and how it goes down. Has absolutely zero to do with where you live in the country.

I'm only about 1.5 years out of college and don't have a ton of money saved up for much of a down payment. Pretty :ohno: about moving and having to leave the house on the market for 6+ months when I move, but maybe I shouldn't worry as much.
It just seems to me that the interest paid on $90,000 plus the cost of all of the appliances, actually upkeeping the yard and maintaining the house would pretty much break even with paying rent for a couple of years. I would make money if I could sell the house easily, but aren't prices low right now because houses are hard to sell?

Price is a component of this. The person buying a $200K house in Overland Park in a homeowners association is probably worried about Billy Bob who owns the service station down the road putting the Trans Am up on blocks in the front yard.
People buying million dollar lots to construct custom homes don't worry about that crap because generally the type of people who want to park in their yard don't have the means to live in the area.
They very well may have something that would function as a HOA (often they're just called community boards), but it's more for paying for services/amenities than restricting property rights.

I bought mine 13months after grad.
They are cheap because there are more houses than people able to buy right now.
If you plan to move in 3yrs for sure(like out of town) maybe you should hold off, but if you would just be moving to a nicer neighborhood, I would buy. You would be amazed what is available and for how inexpensive in some areas right now.

Not all "rich" people want to live on farms, wear overalls, and raise pigs. Sorry.
HOA's aren't a question of being rich or poor, it's a question of middle class vs. upper class. This is probably lost on a board with such low class inhabitants though.
Name the absolute nicest, highest end, neighborhood in your city. They have an HOA. Guarantee.
Stop conflating wealth with class, dumbass.
you didn't really say that and if you did you're a dumbass. one of the few things men have in this world is their lawn, make it rough ridin' nice. do it. your neighbor was right. /thread
My neighbor is a dumbass. This isn't the first time I've spoken to him. His yard isn't even that nice, and if he wants to tell his neighbors how to manage their homes, he should move somewhere with an HOA.
FWIW, living in a HOA is essentially admitting you're living in a middle class trailer park.
Proponent of ending the use of "the R word"?
If your HOA has rules in it about the height of your grass, where your vehicle can be parked, what color you can paint your house etc. You live in a middle class trailer park.
I realize that the definition of upper class is quite different in Kansas than it is back east, but I actually know people that are appalled at the thought of living among people for which such rules would be though necessary.
Pfft.
once you get to a certain level, you are splitting hairs, bro.
They very well may have something that would function as a HOA (often they're just called community boards), but it's more for paying for services/amenities than restricting property rights.
your "few acres" are now a "million dollar lot"? Did you buy, like, Kirstie Alley's old house or something?

who rents a house?
lol, poor people do.
Young people who don't want to hassle with buying a house that they'll probably only live in for 3-4 years do, too.
Bro, buy a house. Do it now. you will not find a cheaper time to do so and will def make money on it in 3-4 yrs.
I would make money if I could sell the house easily, but aren't prices low right now because houses are hard to sell?
the advice he gave you is very bad. assuming you live in the midwest, it's better for your longterm financial health to rent instead of buy (at the present time).

You're a effing idiot. One of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Johnson County has a very strict HOA, and has restrictions such as fencing, secondary buildings, etc. Anyone who wants to build has to go through the HOA approval process.
LOL at your ignorance.

LOL at anyone who thinks Johnson County is the epitome of what upper class is. Hint, when I say upper class I'm talking about the 1-2 percent of the nation that could be classically defined based on generational wealth, education and taste. There maybe 1 ore 2 families in Kansas that even qualify as truly upper class.
Apparently you rough ridin' hayseeds think that when your cousin Jethro won the Powerball he automatically became upper class.

You're neighbor won...and won big. Boom, roasted, headshot.

Although, I may have been considered that nosy neighbor myself a couple of years ago when a new couple moved in across the street and left their wireless router open for anyone to access. I could see all of their shared files - vacation photos, tax documentation, etc. Nothing juicy. I looked with the thought in mind that, hey, If some ho is going to leave all her windows open and walk around the house naked, I'm probably going to look no matter how ugly she is - and this wasn't really any different. Mystery of the lifetime. I hated that old woman. She always had this big black dude over there helping her with yard work. Very :opcat: Wait wait wait...it was a BLACK lab!! I'm surprised I didn't see her (dog) swinging from a branch on my tree!

I feel like I missed my opening, but eff it. Out here in the OC (that's right, I said it, what?), you can't buy a damn house without an HOA. 10 to 50 million dollar houses: HOA. Entry level (yes entry level) half million dollar house? HOA.
The clubhouse doesn't pay for itself bad person.

I thought this was about NOISY neighbors, which is far worse.

There's a Mexican family down the street who holds giant backyard barbecues complete with extra-loud electronic keyboard-sounding music. They also got in trouble with the HOA (lol) because they planted corn in the flower bed (was kind of hilarious).

The bbq events are complete with tents with Verizon logos on them. No idea where they got them, but kinda jealous. For Mexican independence day and also World Cup events, they stake an enormous Mexican flag in their front yard between two posts with a wire strung across the middle. HOA also frowned on that, but they played the ethnic pride card (of the 40 households in the neighborhood, 37 are black). Boom, asado.

No. Never been invited. :frown: Plus, some quick profiling heavily suggests these are family affairs. Did I mention that they own two monster trucks? Well, they do. I've always just assumed they were drug lords or something. Thought about "randomly" walking by once and playing the "yo hablo espanol tambien" card or maybe a "que bueno tu quinceanera" to see if I could score an invite.

I don't really participate. My neighbor is retired and super into it. I sign over my proxy vote to him. He takes this responsibility very seriously and reports back with a recap of the meeting that is almost as long and thorough as the meeting itself (which pisses me off). He will always pick up two copies of all the paperwork and give me mine and I will act all interested and immediately dump it in the recycling without reading any of it.

He will always pick up two copies of all the paperwork and give me mine and I will act all interested and immediately dump it in the recycling without reading any of it.
I bet he would blow out your sprinkler for less than $20.

HOA's sound like a pain in the ass and rough ridin' stupid.

no crap.
but I'm honestly more concerned with the effect gas prices have on the economy on the whole and how suburbanism led to the decline of many great cities.

There is a little bit of a fad starting in the new residential market to create better planned master communities to recreate the city proximity of things to increase walking. It gained a lot of steam right as the big crap hit the bigger fan a couple years ago. I think it will pick back up when the engine starts rolling again.
There seems to be a trend of people wanting to get the community feel back while still staying in the suburbs.

building "community-esque" exurbs is just as annoying. [/annoyingsoapbox]

schools are better in the suburbs of omaha (don't have kids or GAF but I'm told it's good for my prop. value)

For some reason, I've always pictured that you live in the American Pie 2 beach house. I think I saw a pic once featuring wood floors and from then on associated the two.

Isn't it all relative?
(but for your situation where you live makes a lot of sense)

yeah, it actually used to be a seasonal rental. smaller than american pie, though. A couple houses on my street are vacation rentals. Weird to see vacationing families on their bikes and crap on my sidewalk while I go in to work.

warm up your happiness, [redacted], gas prices and suburban growth are inversely correlated (in theory, no idea if empirically).

You should hear all the bitching about this in DC's local papers (great reads, btw. full of underemployed journalists writing about stabbings and racial strife and great local restaurants/music). Huge rift right now with the "anti-gentrification" black community against the black families that "abandoned" their shitty stabbing-filled-but-awesome-local-eatery neighborhoods and "fled" to the suburbs.
Also, I went to one HOA meeting a few years ago. I was the only one there not in a suit and not a banker/lawyer/doctor. They're like the huxtables, but more fashionable.
