as in bicycle.

Any rec's?

keep in mind while I am very wealthy, I got that way by being frugal so lets try to keep the price under control.

I will use it mostly as a commuting bike, no mountain trails or extreme-y style antics from me.

Will Big Papi screw me over?
Local bike shops are pretty good at jacking up the prices and pushing the most expensive bikes
Do you trust them?

Any specific bikes?

get a trek from a local dealer. Like a 7000 or 7100.  A hybrid.  Not a mountain bike, but can handle some easy dirt trails.

They seem fine.  Bought a basket and got bikes serviced and they weren't pushy at all.  Said it may take till Wednesday, but worked ahead and finished the same day.  They have cool kid bikes there.  You're a cool kid, figure you'd want one.

$400-800 for a nice cruiser with fat beach tires.  $600-$1200 for like a racing bike.

We have two 25-35 year old Schwinns.  Bikes last forever.

Cabelas carried those last Christmas.  Everyone referred to them as Pee Wee Herman bikes.

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

seriously, riding a bike just makes you feel better than everyone else.  you're smarter, look more fit, better for the environment, can get pissed at people on cell phones, etc.  doesn't get much more elite than that.

nope. wrong. you're right, but only a certain type of person can pull it off. you have to be trim, fit and elite already. you can't start pathetic and expect to begin the bike culture; or i'll be there to make fun.

step 1: buy bike
step 1: buy helmet

i had a massive wreck last weekend that, had i not been wearing a helmet, could have resulted in my untimely demise.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

I bought a bike from target, cheap one, with the idea of riding it around everywhere instead of a car.  I got a couple miles away from my house and almost died, had to carry the thing back with me.  Now the bike has flat tires, sitting in my garage.

I've heard that's exactly why you want to get a "real" brand to start out.  :dunno:

2009 Team Fuji

the 2007 Fuji was voted the #1 road bike priced under $1200 by roadbikereview.com (an independent study)

This is the same great frame, easlily upgradeable, Shimano/Ultegra, 2 ring front........and more than worthy as a commuter bike.

Would suggest not locking something like this up in public. (take it inside with you if the bike will be out of your sight for a long period of time)

Ya, but when you are seated on a bike you can cruise around and look into second story windows.

More of a reflection on me being terribly out of shape than the bike being a POS.  Both are true but I think I could have managed better if I wasn't so lazy.

yes. until they convert. lol

I know of a lot of older road bikers who were once runners who's knees and hips have gone to junk or can't take the constant punishment of running half marathons or marathons. I'm a good example. I'm 31 and I have chronic knee pain from my drive leg which then affects my opposite hip when favoring the other leg...and so on. Biking relieves alot of the pain.

Road biking is a great way to enjoy the Flint Hills, get some sun, burn a crap ton of calories...with little impact.

I like any type of elitist to be honest.  I dislike those who are just casually in to anything.  If you are going to be "in" to something, might as well go %100 in to it.

if you are going to bike solely as a commuter and not for trails, etc...then the trek valencia is a good bike to consider.
