southwell article from ny paper.

Shane Southwell could have played for a well-known college basketball program; the 6-7 senior from Rice HS in Manhattan was courted by Big East power Marquette and a slew of other schools. But Southwell chose to follow two teammates to a lesser-known school.

Excuse me, we are #27 all time, Marquette is #24 according to ESPN all time rankings. GMAFB

"Him being cerebral and his understanding of the game ... Kansas saw that Shane is a versatile player," Hicks said. "He'll do great there."

Typical east coast idiocy regarding flyover country.

Try to tell somebody from New York or Boston that folks that live in Lawrence don't really still ride horse drawn wagons and go without indoor plumbing and they'll laugh in your face.

meyer pretty effusive in praise of traynham.

Think he is a winner. Unbelievable on the ball defender. Gave some of the better ball handling point guards in the class fits with his strong and pesky defense. Handles well. Solid decision maker. Occasional scorer. Think he will help a college team win.

Has he been on any officials yet?  Is it just me or has his recruitment been pretty quiet?

I haven't seen where he has indicated any favorites.

I like traynham.  I don't, however, find him substantially better than Sprads.  In fact, I think I like Sprads a little better.

I saw Spradling play at the AAU tourny in Manhattan over the summer.  I was a bit confused as to why I'm supposed to be excited about his game.  Not saying he's not worth a scholarship, or anything.  Just curious to hear some analysis on this kid.  Anybody seen him play?  What does he bring to the table?

I like to compare him to Traynham, which is who we'd take is we didn't take Sprads.  Sprads has less explosiveness and speed, but more than makes up for it in composure, size, and vision.  A year ago with solid personel surrounding him Traynham looked alright, but he'll try to take the game over too much and he'll get manhandled by big12 guards.  Kid is too tiny.  I feel so much safer with Will.  He makes good decisions, is fundamentally sound and hustles.

as a small forward you dumbasses.  meyer qualified his statement with the position.  southwell is 6'7" and 205, at that size no one would be scoring much in the big 12 from the block.  GMAFB turds.  this kid isn't akeem wright.

They aren't kiddin when they say that they haven't been following the situation.

With Mitchell and Asprillia, this class might actually be as good last years.  Would be amazin' given how it looked most of the summer.  Not going to happen though.

I remember thinking that Spradling needs to hit the weights.  He's relatively tall, but seemed pretty thin.  I'm sure Greenawalt will have fun training this kid.

Yeah, I'd say a lot of HS basketball players are pretty thin though.  Still a lot of the anti-strength and conditioning mentality out there in the basketball world, especially at the HS level.  I'm glad Martin and staff don't advocate this.

I don't question Traynham's vision or BBIQ.  I think he and Sprads are pretty comparible in that respect.  I just think Spradling's versitility and shooting, (or more to the point his ability to get his shot off) slightly outweighs Tryanham's quicks.  I think both players are in the 125th to 175th best player range.  I would have been OK with either.  Not sure it makes sense to get both.

would your preference change given a roster that includes a 6'4" combo point in the previous class and a 6'6" point forward in the same class?

Yes. To a degree, the addition of Southwell would make what Sprads brings a little more redundant than what Trayn brings.  Good point.  I also think it's clear that we are prioritizing a high level smallish quick guard for the '11 class.  The aparent lack of a push for Traynham is a little puzzling in that regard.

Freddy Asprilla, a 6-foot-10, 280-pound center who was the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in 2009, and currently one of the top junior college prospects in the country, will make an official visit to Canisius College, according to Art Alvarez, his AAU coach.

Alvarez, who runs the AAU Miami Tropics program, is trying to set up a visit for Asprilla to Canisius on Oct. 21. He is scheduled to visit Kansas State this weekend and Hofstra on Oct. 23. Asprilla is also being recruited by the likes of Oklahoma and Memphis.

"He will take all five visits before making a decision," Alvarez said.

Alvarez said the Golden Griffins are in the mix because coach Tom Parrotta recently visited Villavicencio, Colombia to speak with Asprilla's parents.

"Tommy has worked the kid real hard," Alvarez said. "He went all the way down to Colombia, which no one has done that."

As an assistant at Hofstra, Parrotta also coached former Tropics guard Carlos Rivera. Another former Tropics guard, Gaby Belardo, who transferred to Canisius from South Florida during the off-season, is a good friend of Asprilla.

Parrotta is also in pursuit of another Tropics player, Angel Rodriguez, a 5-11 junior point guard. Parrotta flew down to Mexico to watch him play for the Puerto Rico National team.

"Tommy works his (butt) off," Alvarez said. "That's what impresses me about Tom Parrotta is his work ethic and he's gone out of his way to recruit this kid who I know he wants very bad. Those are the reasons why we are extending a visit to him."

If Asprilla signs with Canisius, he will be one of the highest-rated players to sign with the Griffs. He signed with Miami (Fla.) out of high school but didn't qualify academically and attended Paterson Prep School in North Carolina for a year before signing with Florida International.

Asprilla averaged 14 points and 9.3 rebounds but decided to transfer after Florida International coach Sergio Rouco was replaced by Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas. FIU, however, refused to release Asprilla from his scholarship and he couldn't transfer immediately to a Division I school. Asprilla is enrolled at two-year Miami Dade College and has two years of Division I eligibility remaining.

Alvarez said that Asprilla could skip college and enter the 2010 NBA draft.

"The kid is a lottery pick," Alvarez said. "I've been telling all the coaches that he can sign with you, but there's an opportunity he could go straight to the pros from junior college. That's how good he is."
