Wondering if this is the second most-repeated comment about Kansas — and why is 'cardinal' included in that list??

Quote
It’s a tournament where there is a team from Manhattan, Kan., but not Manhattan, N.Y. – the Little Apple one upping the Big Apple. Where terms such as Hoyas, Tar Heels and Hoosiers make sense and it’s great to be a Boilermaker, a Sooner or a Cardinal.

why wouldn't it be???  racist?
"these are no longer “games” in the commonly accepted sense of the term. these are free throw shooting contests leavened by the occasional sprint to the other end of the floor."

The other mascots are unique ... but cardinal, not so much.

This could be Ball State or even Iowa State (if you didn't know who was actually in). I would have picked something unique like Torero.

That sentence doesn't make sense. Is the Little Apple where those teams make sense? To avoid confusion from the previous sentence's context, where (not a good preposition at any rate) probably should be although. Should there be a question mark at the end of the sentence, meaning the first four teams make sense but the last two don't. But it really reads as though the whole sentence is a introductory clause to something else, such as " . . . or a Cardinal, being a Jayhawk is just gay."

That's easy enough, but has nothing to do with this thread.

A team whose mascot is its color and who represents itself with a pine tree seems pretty unique to me.

Iowa State's mascot is Cy the Cardinal (after the school color). As for the pine tree, I didn't see pine tree on the list. Did you???

stanford and isu enjoy an inverse mascot/nickname relationship.

That's nice, but you didn't answer the question about Louisville yet. Hop to.

Or lame.

the stanford cardinal is lamer than St. Patrick's day falling on a rainy Monday.

a tournament where it's great to be a Cardinal

A complex concept worthy of a lengthy debate, for sure.
