How do you guys deal with stress/work load issues/procrastination.

I know most of you have faced all three.

I have the most problems with the first two because of the third one, but I feel like the 1st one may be related to the third one before the 2nd one comes in to play and that my other issue (no concept of time[srsly]) just makes the first three worse.

Any suggestions?

I have begun to write almost everything down in my planner and to try and schedule things as much as possible, but I have organizational issues as well.

I have begun to write almost everything down in my planner and to try and schedule things as much as possible, but I have organizational issues as well.

Some people spend too much time planning and not enough time doing.  My wife writes down everything and makes charts and graphs on how to attack problems, chores, projects, etc.  Problem is when she completes her planning stage I have already finished with what she was planning and she lights into me for not doing it the way she had projected.  I like to get all jazzed up on coffee first thing in the morning and do 90% of my work the first 30 minutes I am on the job.  As for studying and reading I procrastinate but do well at not worrying about it until the very last minute.  This makes my worrying much more intense but the stress doesn't last for a long time since I put it off so long.

Little bit at a time.  it's a habit, 30 minute intervals followed by hour breaks.  You just have to get mentally tough and get in the habit.

In my "traditional" college classes I do well.  Read, understand, test.  Read, understand, presentation.  Research, read, write paper.

It is the portfolios that frighten me to the core.

Spend a little extra time at the beginning until you have a handle on how much time/effort you need to spend on it.  This will help you get a handle on the workload, alleviate stress, and allow you to procrastinate without worrying later on.

At my job, I have about 80 issues that I need to take care.  Unfortunately most days I have more issues coming in then I have time to get fixed--thus the number has increased from 40 to 80 issues in the last few months.

Clients yell at me to work on their stuff first

Supervisors yell at me to work on their stuff first

New issues come in and they are already on the phone, so I must work them first.

Here is how I handle it...fix the squeeky wheel as fast as possible, then I just start going from the top down...by the time I get half way down my list (those I haven't talked to in a month) have either forgotten about the issue or fixed it themselves.

I was big into customer service when I started my job, wanted to get everything finished and help everyone in a timely matter.  I gave up.  I just do what I can to get through the day and go home.  Perhaps someday they will get us some more help because the client base/call volume has only doubled in the last year...no big deal.

I can't stand the read, understand (memorize), then test (regurgitate memorized info) type classes. Im enjoying my 500 level and higher engineering classes: read problem statement, understand parameters, use knowledge and resources to develop a solution.

One thing I do is that I work on assignments right after I have been presented the knew information/techniques. Also look over the new material before we cover in-depth in class. I guess the point of all this is to not get behind and in some cases stay ahead....makes tests a breeze.

I was a habitual crammer, so I can't help you there.

As for when I get stressed at work, I just think back to what it was like working in a 120-degree warehouse one summer. Totally stress-free (pick up box, move box), but insanely boring and horrible. I ask myself if I would trade for that, and of course the answer is no. Then I feel better about my current situation. That may sound corny, but it helps me.

as for studying, get study groups/study dates/meet friends a Hale.  Make yourself responsible to others on your schedule and time.  That way you feel obligated (well most do) because you will have worked out a time and place with others so you will be responsbile to them.  [theory does not really apply that well to forced labor camps at Hale. but may for you anyway]

I never understood this.  How in the hell can anyone get anything out of studying together?  I've seen people in the library doing it and it always turns into a bunch or retards jackin' their jaws about topics other than the class materials.  I need to be utterly alone with no noise/radio/tv-nothing.  If the proffesor follows the text I just read all the chapters the night before the test.

QFT.  The couple of times I tried to do that with Chem and Calc courses, it ended up with me teaching the tards the basic stuff that was covered the first couple of days of class.  I ended up having to study on my own anyway.

I found what worked best for me when I absolutely had to get some homework/studying done and I was procrastinating was to go to the 24-hour study area in the library.  It was a little noisier, but I was away from the distractions video games and surfing the net.

So Rusty, were you the dumbest guy in your crew? If so, I could see how study groups would be beneficial.

The key is to get friends that are just slightly dumber than you are.  Because nothing makes you understand a subject more than having to explain it to someone else.  So if you are forced to explain the new concepts that you are to be tested over, you're golden.

I still don't get it.  Why waste your time explaining it to someone when you can just read it and explain it to yourself?  I have a "limited time only photgraphic memory" so maybe that helps me.  Anything I read I can regurgitate almost verbatim for about a week.  It makes cramming pretty much the only way to go.

That didn't answer the question. I got better grades than a number of CS students who were much smarter than me when it came to programming/computer crap.

"Photographic memory" is extremely over rated for lots of kinds of tests IMO.

Knowing facts != being able to apply concepts (solve problems, write essays, etc).
