The Royals have the #2 pick in the upcoming draft.

The leading possibilities appear to be two high school seniors: right-handed pitcher Rick Porcello of West Orange, N.J., and third baseman Josh Vitters of Cypress, Calif. But at least four or five other players are likely to generate serious consideration.

The Royals, under Moore, are expected to follow the general Atlanta philosophy, which places a priority on high school prospects in the early rounds and generally follows Major League Baseball's slotting recommendations on signing bonuses.

The slotting recommendation for the second overall pick is roughly $3.1 million, but such a ceiling could make Porcello a risky selection since his agent is Scott Boras. The draft's other premier prep pitcher, Matt Harvey, is also represented by Boras.

The Royals would, almost certainly, select Price if the Devil Rays opt for someone else, but they appear lukewarm toward other college pitchers.

Missouri State's Ross Detwiler and North Carolina State's Andrew Brackman have been inconsistent; Clemson's Daniel Moskos projects more as a reliever, which limits his appeal as the No. 2 overall pick.

Club officials will examine Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters, who is generally viewed as the top nonpitching collegiate prospect. But Wieters is also a Boras client and is believed to be seeking a bonus far heftier than the slotting recommendation.

The top high school position players in addition to Vitters are Chatsworth, Calif., infield teammates Mike Moustakas and Matt Dominguez and outfielder Michael Burgess of Tampa, Fla.

With the 2nd pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.....The Kansas City Royals select.....

Mike Moustakas/SS/Chatsworth (Calif.) HS

He can really hit and drive in runs. He's got good bat speed and is a contact hitter.

He has light-tower power.

And by the way, he is salty.
csourk is the best pre-college poster on this board.  way better than oxlp956

I don't see why they didn't go after that HS pitcher (a Scott Boras client).  With the new rules, if they don't get them signed by Aug. 15th, the kid can't be drafted and has to either sit out a year or go to college (for 3 more years), and the club gets compensated, I believe, with an equal pick in next year's draft.  So what's the harm in going after the kid?  If you're the Royals, at worst you get two top 5 draft picks next year.  At best you get a great prospect for probably less than what Boras originally wanted anyways.  What Boras is doing now (and smartly I might add) is he's pushing the price up so high that the kid falls to a wealthy/successful team lower in the draft who will pay what he wants because they are wealthy/successful and can pay that.

The Kansas City Royals project Mike Moustakas, the California schoolboy they took Thursday with the second overall pick of the Major League Baseball entry draft, as a shortstop. More importantly, though, they see a hitter who eventually will help a team anywhere he plays.

Moustakas, one of two first-round players drafted from Chatsworth (Calif.) High School, is a two-time Los Angeles-area player of the year who hit .577 with 24 homers and 52 RBIs this spring.

Moustakas is a client of agent Scott Boras, whose players usually seek signing bonuses that greatly exceed the parameters suggested by Major League Baseball.

Moustakas has committed to playing at USC this fall if Boras and the Royals can't agree to contract terms by Aug. 15. The Royals would receive the third overall pick next year if they are unable to sign Moustakas.

Other Royals picks:

66. Samuel Runion, RHP, AC Reynolds HS, Asheville, N.C.

96. Daniel Duffy, LHP, Cabrillo HS, Lompoc, Calif.

126. Peter Hodge Nielsen, RHP, Prince of Wales SS, Vancouver, B.C.

156. Adrian Ortiz, CF, Pepperdine.

Just more than a week from Major League Baseball’s deadline to sign draft picks and there has been virtually no communication between the Royals and No. 2 overall selection Mike Moustakas.
