My wife has an iPad II and my son has a Galaxy tab.  The only difference between the two that I can see is that she is always paying for apps and music and he has never paid for any app or song.

Woot had the Galaxy refurb on sale for $170.  Bought one.  Thought that I could either give it to my wife or throw it away for that price if I don't like it.
Galaxy 10 or 7? What kind of warranty did your refurb come with?

ipad
LIKE: great screen, great software, great new processor, most future proof
DISLIKE: big, price

ipad mini
LIKE: my perfect size, great software
DISLIKE: same RAM and processor as iphone5, screen resolution

nexus7
LIKE: price, processor, easiest to watch firstrowsports, screen resolution
DISLIKE: too slim (in screen width), not familiar with the software

I think apple mumped me by hitting the early adopter ipad mini people with the old processor, 512 mb ram and non-retina display. they will roll out my perfect ipad mini in a year. But, I have some motivation to get one now.  :dubious:

just walked over to the apple store and looked at the ipad mini.  confirmed too small.  no reason to upgrade from an iphone or ipod touch.

Get the nexus 7 - cheap & refurbuished - or some other cheap droid tablet as that's clearly your best temporary option by your priority list and get an ipad mini when it's up to your standards.

Wait, are you gonna get cell service for this thing?  I don't know what each has for that.  I love having 4G on my ipad.

Stevedave, why do you think the nexus 7 is the best for firstrowsports? Android doesn't support flash, which is what firstrowsports runs on.

The problem is, none of these tablets are very reliable for watching cat games on the go. The functionality could break if apple makes a software patch that breaks the loophole allowing it to work. Likewise, I don't know of any reliable ways on Android to get flash running.  That's why I'm hesitant to recommend a tablet for you.

The Nexus 7 is very good. It's got nice hardware, and is well made. You seem to be a fan of the screen size, so that's another plus. It also has an extremely attractive price. It's the best value for your money. The downside, is the app selection. That's why iPads are head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to the tablet race. There are just so many more native iPad apps. It makes it a better experience.

I would get either the iPad (4th generation). Or the Nexus 7. If you are set on streaming firstrowsports, do some research to make sure that's possible first.

Both tablets have workarounds to watch flash. I've just read that android makes it easier. Nota deal breaker either way.

you split your cable and run an input into the elgato tuner.  the tuner plugs into your usb port.  you can then watch your cable chanels on your laptop/home pc.  it will also act as a DVR.

then, you can download the iphone app ($5), and use it to access your home computer where the tuner is located.  you can watch live tv or shows you recorded with the dvr function.

that's pretty elite, but would my laptop have to be running the entire time?

The link makes it sound like you could only get "basic cable" channel or stuff via antenna.  Is that wrong?
