Curious how the Fire turns out.  My mom is dead set on an ipad2 and I have not been successful in my attempts to sway her towards the Fire.  Guess I shouldn't give a damn if she wants to waste a few hundred bucks but it's just the principal, ya know?

I've been looking around, and the big drawback on the Kindle Fire seems to be that they don't provide the ability to get the android app that lets you tether your phone to your tablet, to let your phone provide the internet connectivity (most android tablets do this).

If you are going to be around wifi all the time, then it's not a problem.

That doesn't seem like a big deal to me  :dunno:

Yeah, I don't see myself really using a tablet anywhere other than around a wifi.  Guess it would be kinda neat to have the option to roam with it but I can't imagine that actually coming into play very often, if ever.

That's what I am saying, I don't think it can tether with a cable OR connect to the phone via bluetooth....you have to have a phone with a hotspot if you want to use your phone for the internet connection.

Don't need open source for apps. You're gonna be getting custom operating systems based on fire. You're gonna get Fire on other tablets.

Probably the biggest thing. Would be pretty sweet to get the Fire's modified Android running on my Touchpad.

Why would you prefer a closed down android over a fully open and customizable android?

If the source is released, why is one more "open and customisable" than the other?

I expect a full and detailed report.

If the 7 inch screen isn't too big of a pain in the ass I think I'll pull the trigger on one.

Just because the source is released, doesn't mean anyone can go right in and change stuff up. There is still no android market and it's still locked down. You're gonna have to be a developer who will spend months recoding it to get it more open and customizable.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/18/kindle-fire-vs-nook-tablet-fight/#continued

With the stock OS, I'd probably get the Kindle Fire. With Cyanogenmod, I'd get the Nook tablet.

My wife bought a couple nook colors for a little over $100 a month ago. I've had fun putting other roms on it. I still don't have much use for it beyond reading, but it's a decent little toy to have.

I bought a couple factory refurbished Nook Colors for $130 for my kids for xmas.  Planning on rooting them and putting android on them for games, apps, and other stuff.  Couldn't pass them up so cheap.  Came with 2yr warranties too.
