New Kindle screen is beautiful.  Just like paper.  Plus you can read it in bright daylight with no glare at all.  Also you can change the font/size of the script to whatever you like best.  You also get free 3g if you get the 3g version so you can buy books or download new stuff whenever you want without having to worry about being in wifi range.  33, bad news re. the page turning sound, sorry.

3g require mobile service agreement with someone, or is it a one time deal with amazon?

free via amazon.  I think they use ATT's network but you don't pay for it.

Sounds just like the B&W nook. E-ink looks really good. Also, the bottom part is a color touch screen that you can actually swipe it like turning a page.

Hmmm, won't work for me then.  I like for people sitting around me to know how incredibly fast I'm reading.  It's pretty much the only reason I read.

3rd Gen Kindle Screen:

It's the same screen as the other generations, no? All E-ink screens have looked the same to me.

I'll go on record as saying it provides 100% contrast between me and any loser that does not own a kindle.

Also, with Nooks, you can supposedly get unlimited access to books for an hour while you're in the actual store.  So you can take your Nook in there, sit at the cafe, and start shopping and reading all you want.

SD is starting to get me interested in a Kindle.  I'm now somewhat torn.

They're both prolly awesome.  I just didn't like the color nook because of the screen.

The B&w nook and kindle are probably very similar. Just look up the features and see if there is an exclusive you like better. I wanted the nook because it has more relaxed drm, can share books with people for up to 15 days, and the mp3 player in it seemed to be pretty nice. Get a color nook if you want your android apps on it.

From one of our friends at kstatefans, on what he got for Christmas-

Some kind of e-reader for books. looks like a screen or something to download books. Not in my life time, thank you.  Back it goes. I'll stick to hardcover books which I can read and keep or re-sell. No paperbacks either.

The family is still laughing at me and shaking their heads.

got a kindle from the mom.  like it.  slimz, which newspapers you subscribe to?  I think I am converting my economist subscription to kindle if I can get a price reduction (doubt I will be able to because amazon seems pretty racist right now) but would like to know if there are any other newspapers worth subscribing to?  I think I will end up with AP Politics and AP World.  Considering a Spanish language newspaper but their options don't include Mexican or Spain.  Just Columbia, Argentina and then like 3-4 Brasilian (wtf?).

Blogs?  Got Buster Olney.

Any other free/good things you've found slimz?

Also got a kindle for xmas.  Seems like a rip off to subscribe to blogs that are free online and have to pay a monthly fee for them on kindle.  If you find any good free ones let me know.

Yeah, I looked at some of the newspapers and blogs, but it seemed kind of dumb to subscribe to stuff that I can (mostly) get free online.  I feel like the Kindle pricing is still a little high for most of the paid stuff. The books they charge $9 should be more like $6, but I think they'll come down in the next year or two.

Stuff I'm really liking so far are the "classics" for free. I've been filling in some gaps on stuff that would otherwise cost me $5-$10 at a bookstore. They don't have great chapter breaks like the paid stuff, but read just fine.

so, I'm reading up on some rando kindle board and apparently you can torrent pretty much any book in .doc or .pdf format and email it to your designated kindle address and it will download direct to your kindle  :surprised:

Are those all listed under classics?  most looked $.99 but I did not look through that.

It's all the public domain stuff. There's some good stuff there. Most of it is Jane Austen boredom though.
