Time will tell whether this thing is pointless or not but dammit this iPad is fun to use.

(all signs so far point to me getting a lot of use out my new tablet. I even just let the wife take the laptop out of town without hesitation.)

I'm going to build my own ipad.  It will be 1/2 the price you guys paid and I'll have a lot of fun doing it.

Posted from ipad

Ditto. Seems to work pretty good. :dunno: It's like a supercomputer but with frisbee capability.

I got an iPad for Christmas and it is awesome. Much more convienent to use than a laptop.

Got a Kindle from the ladyfriend. Wasn't looking to get one, but she knows I like techy stuff so she got it on her own. Figured I'd get a tablet in a year or two that would also function as an ebook reader, but this will be fun to play with in the meantime.

My iPhone has pretty much rendered my netbook irrelevant for couch/TV browsing. Think the iPad would be pretty sweet for that, though.

Smart phone browsing is not a fun experience. You guys are nuts.

got a kindle from the mom.  like it.  slimz, which newspapers you subscribe to?  I think I am converting my economist subscription to kindle if I can get a price reduction (doubt I will be able to because amazon seems pretty racist right now) but would like to know if there are any other newspapers worth subscribing to?  I think I will end up with AP Politics and AP World.  Considering a Spanish language newspaper but their options don't include Mexican or Spain.  Just Columbia, Argentina and then like 3-4 Brasilian (wtf?).

Blogs?  Got Buster Olney.

Any other free/good things you've found slimz?

Also got a kindle for xmas.  Seems like a rip off to subscribe to blogs that are free online and have to pay a monthly fee for them on kindle.  If you find any good free ones let me know.

You should take it back and get a Color Nook from Barnes and Noble. If you root it, it's basically a really affordable, pretty nice android tablet.

This is true, however it compels me to pick up the kindle and have something to read instead of buying $13 digi-books

I'm about 95% sure I'll be buying one of these in the next month.  Good purchase?  Anyone?  Anyone?

The standard nook or the color nook? The color nook's screen is pretty nice. I got my wife the standard nook. Black Friday, $100 at best buy.

Go play with it. The first thing you'll notice is that it's heavy. Not in a bad way, but in more of a solid way. I think it's pretty nice. Definitely root it, though.

new color screen seemed to have too much glare and basically appeared to be a laptop screen.  Also, the last thing I would want was to root an ereader in attempt to make it a tablet.  I mean, it's for reading.  I already have my phone and laptop for BBS'ing.

kindle and nooks are the first technology I have heard of that make me feel old.  I prefer  the hard copy.  can loan it out, dont have to worry about future format compatibility, etc.  if i buy a book,I want to be able to keep for re-reading if I want.

get off my lawn.

You do keep the book or re-reading forever.  Plus, you don't have to worry about losing it or moving it or storing it etc.  :dunno:  Also, you can lend books to other people for 14 days if the publisher allows it.  Another great feature is the kindle app on your phone.  I can pop open a book I was reading on my phone if I want and it opens to wherever I left off on my kindle (and vice versa).  Pretty great.

I'm getting sick of buying and assembling bookshelves.  We moved into our house two years ago, and I still haven't bought or assembled any new ones and left the old books in boxes because I don't want to get rid of them, but I don't want to really spend money on displaying what I've read.

I may just sell them all in a garage sale.  The keeping them online forever thing is highly attractive to me.

You don't take away the ereader capabilities. You basically just unlock the ability to use the android market. No reason not to.

Does it make a page turning sound when you go to the next page on these things?  I love the sound of a page being turned.

I don't keep much.  I have a small two-shelfer that isn't even full.  The rest I give away.  My fam reads a lot.  Books get passed around like KU BB team managers.  I will use the crap out of one, then never see it again for two years while everyone else has their way with it.

Also, I am skeptical of the screen.  I work on a high res monitor all day and my eyes hate me at the end of the day.  I have heard that the kindle screen is completely diff, but feel like I may be giving my eyes a kitn if I read on a screen at night .

Final, and possibly biggest concern:  I read in the bathroom a lot.  Worried about electronics in the bathroom.

New Kindle screen is beautiful.  Just like paper.  Plus you can read it in bright daylight with no glare at all.  Also you can change the font/size of the script to whatever you like best.  You also get free 3g if you get the 3g version so you can buy books or download new stuff whenever you want without having to worry about being in wifi range.  33, bad news re. the page turning sound, sorry.

3g require mobile service agreement with someone, or is it a one time deal with amazon?

You buy the books or get free books or whatever and they are stored on Amazon's site and in your kindle forever.  If you lose your kindle or get a new one or whatever you still have all your books :dunno:
