i believe i said everything best when i said:

i would be completely content with a recruiting class of josh gray, michael orris and darrell johnson while showing watson and omari the door. especially if orris is the sacrifice we need to make at the altar of jerrance howard.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the oscar Weber era.

Anybody who knows a damn thing about KSU basketball knows this is not an "absolute need" year on the trail for KSU, particularly given that everyone is returning from last year and the late start for our staff.

And if you get the chance to land a dynamic scorer and playmaker like Josh Gray who really blew up his SR year, you go after it with all you've got. That kid could really turn this class into a good but not absolutely required success.

oh, eff off you rube. how many top 100 are still uncommitted? the class i listed is a clear talent upgrade over what would be leaving, so yeah, i'd be content.

Considering it would be those three instead of Watson, Lawrence, and Moose (presumably), yes, it's a light year upgrade.

Johnson's HS coach has some Art in him...

Quote
"College coaches have come to our high school games and they'd tell me our college kids don't defend as well as him," Russell Vincent, the head coach of Johnson at Parkway North High School, told The Mercury on Tuesday. "Numerous college coaches — some I have very good relationships with — you talk to them and they don't (lie) to me. They told me he could play college basketball on the defensive end of the floor for (them) right now. They'd tell me he could help us."

"I've been around the game for quite a while, and he's one of the best high school defensive players I've ever seen," he said. "He's just an unbelievable defensive presence."

"Minnesota offered him in the fall but he wanted to hold off," he said. "There were all kind of mid-major offers and even Clemson tried to hop in late. After his senior year a lot of larger schools came in hard and quick but the two schools it came down to really was Virginia Tech and K-State."

Should have played hockey, they have positions for big guys that can't play offense.

I'd find it hard to believe that his offense will be that much worse than Gipson's was this year.

I'm not sure what folks are expecting out of a guy that's supposedly still growing into his body.  How many low post players come to college with high-major offensive skills?

Rusty raked me over the coals on this point about Upshaw several pages ago in this same thread for that same point.

And, no, I'm not comparing Johnson to Upshaw, but I am saying that if he doesn't light the world on fire on offense, it's not going to be that much of a surprise.  It took JHR three years to develop something that looked like an offensive game.

Okay, so I embellished for dramatic effect.

I guess what I'm saying is that, like Gipson, we're most likely not going to ask him to shoot the ball outside of 8-10 feet.  So, depending on what we want him to do, it's not like we're asking him to carry a heavy load, much like we didn't really ask Gipson to handle a heavy load.

Both of them, as freshmen, were more rebound/putback guys.

I don't know, we fed gip quite a bit.  he was very good at using his body to clear space for his baby hook when he wasn't faced with a ton of length.  I doubt we run sets to get Johnson the ball on the block.

I'd prefer to hear he was a freak rebounder or something if his highschool coach was going to describe him as one dimensional, defense is probably one of the most coachable aspects of the game.

Agree on Gip to an extent. He had a couple of moves that he was very good at and had developed as a high school/AAU player. You could tell he was in a system where he was asked to post up and score, and he had to because he lacked height. He learned to use his size well to get position, and then score when he got the ball on the block. However, if you took those one or two things away, he really struggled to score and he also struggled to consistently draw contact when attacking the basket against bigger, quicker players. He didn't get into the body of defenders often enough and often got his shot blocked because of that.

I don't see Johnson coming in as skilled as Gip was at scoring on the block. And I'm hopeful Gip will develop a move or two to compliment what he does well so that he isn't as limited by catching the ball in places where he struggled to score.

A lot of Gips struggle later in the season had to do with traffic in the paint due to help defense. Our poor shooting during a part of the big 12 play hurt his game. As a freshmen he was not good in tight spaces.

Should've played for Frank Martin.

In the non-con, he was superb.  And then Conference season happened.
