rankin's thoughts on smith, james and others.  people are starting to fall in love with k. hill.  kstate's apparent failure to exploit their relationship with the younger fl rams is incredibly frustrating.

unrelated, but mokan apparently picked up some 7 foot guy w an e. euro sounding name.  ungoogleable.

Smart tidbits...

Quote
Ask five people what they think about Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus junior wing Marcus Smart and you will undoubtedly get five different opinions on how he will make the most impact as a collegiate player. However, what all five people will agree on is that Smart is tough, a leader, has exceptional basketball IQ and leaves everything that he has on the court.

There are times when we spend too much time trying to pick apart a guy's game and put him into the round hole that round pegs go into. Smart isn't a peg with a definable shape so it's probably best that people just appreciate his toughness and desire to win and understand that he'll be an asset to a high major basketball program.

Quote
"I have offers from North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, pretty much the whole Big 12, some other schools too."

Included in that offer list is Missouri, but Smart says conversations have stalled.

"I haven't heard from Missouri lately," Smart said. "Not since they got a new head coach. I got a new number though so a lot of coaches haven't been able to contact me.

"The most important thing is going somewhere where I can get a good education," Smart said.

Smart says he hasn't narrowed down his list yet, but he hopes to have a decision before he starts his next high school basketball season.

ku gains absolutely no advantage with the Jayhawk Invitational being allowed to take place in Lawrence. None.  :jerk:

Smart takes in Kansas

Marcus Smart and his Texas Assault teammates enjoyed a great deal of success at the Jayhawk Invitational in late April - their first action of the AAU season. During his time in Lawrence, Kan., the four-star shooting guard found time to stop by Allen Fieldhouse with his teammates for an unofficial visit to the University of Kansas - and came away impressed.

Most teams would expect a few bumps and bruises in the first game of the season, as players work out the kinks and learn to work as a unit once more.

Not so for Texas Assault, an AAU powerhouse – at least not in 2011

.
Playing in their first tournament of the spring at the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. during the final weekend in April, the Assault 17U squad advanced to the semi-finals while competing in an extremely talented field. That success was due in no small part to the play of Marcus Smart.

A 6-foot-4, 200-pound guard from Flower Mound (TX) Marcus High School who carries a reputation as a lock-down defender, Smart's earned recognition from Scout.com national recruiting analyst Brian Snow as one of the event's top performers.

"One of the most physical and impressive players in the class of 2012, Smart isn't a super explosive as an athlete but he gets to the rim at will with his strength and just always wins," Snow said. "His shot is getting better and now must be respected. More so than anything, Smart is simply a winner, and showed it in every aspect all weekend long."

Characteristically self-effacing, the burly guard acknowledged he's still got much to improve upon, and seemed more excited by the play of his team.

"For the first time playing a game together with a group of guys, for the first time this year, it was a good experience," he said.

As one might expect, the four-star prospect is being heavily recruited by a number of high major programs including - almost literally - the entire Big 12. Every prep athlete to receive similar attention responds to it differently. Some enjoy it, some would rather not deal with it, and some even seem to be bored by it.

Smart, however, has nothing but appreciation for the road opening up before him. And while at this early stage in the process he considers himself open to all comers, Texas, North Carolina and one other heavy hitter appear to be making more of a push right now than the rest.

"Kansas is still up there, most definitely, no doubt about it," he said. (KU, Texas and UNC are) putting in a little bit more (effort) than other schools, but other schools are still in the running."

While in Lawrence, for the Jayhawk Invitational, Smart made the short cross-town trip to Allen Fieldhouse with his mother and the rest of his Assault teammates for an unofficial visit to Kansas. While there he met with the coaches, toured the facilities and, in general, came away impressed with what the Jayhawks had to offer.

"It was great," he said. "It was a great experience just to be in that type of setting. It was an incredible moment."

Smart wasn't sure when the Assault would next see action, as many of their players are busy with life off the court - including high school proms - as the school year comes to a close.

Stay tuned to Phog.net for more on his recruitment throughout the spring and summer.

I think we can go ahead and scratch Mr. Smart off our lists...seems like he is focused on UT and UNC.

Yeah, another stellar recruiting effort by Frank and Co. for an elite prospect.

Notes on the next Shelvin Mack aka DSR from this past weekend's Spiece Run N Slam Tourney

From Xavier Rivals guy:
D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera - 6-foot-3 shooting guard, Spiece
The coveted guard prospect was up to his usual scoring this weekend. The consistency of his outside shot continues to impress this spring as he made multiple 3-pointers in every game he was evaluated in this weekend. While he uses his bullying drives to the basket less and less often with his ability to pull up and hit the jumper from anywhere out to the perimeter, he actually looks slightly more explosive when attacking the rim.

From Evan Daniels:
D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, SG, Spiece – During a loss to Indiana Elite One, Smith-Rivera showed an ability to score in a variety of different ways. In the first half he struggled to get guy by the defender so he used bumps and step backs to create space and score. In the second half he started getting by the opposition, finishing at the rim and tossing in floaters. He’s a strong, tough kid that knows how to get buckets.

Top 15? You bet. Top 5? pffft

• Junior Lomomba (Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial) is a classic, hard playing small forward. West Virginia is on him the hardest with Cincinnati, New Mexico State, Nevada and Baylor tracking him.

From Jerry Meyer's mailbox:

Quote
Who have been the top players at the point position, two wing positions, and the two post positions so far this AAU season?

- Sammy from Atlanta

Sticking to the 2012 class for all these picks, Kyle Anderson and D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera have been the two most impressive point guard prospects to me this spring. Certainly Anderson, who is much taller and slower than your typical point guard, is an anomaly position-wise. But he does play the point guard position for his team and does a terrific job directing his team and controlling a game.

The same can be said for Smith-Rivera in terms of directing his team and controlling a game. I love the physical nature of his game, and his ability to manufacture points as well as be a distributor.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera will play for Oak Hill Academy next year.
"He was impressed," said Smith-Rivera's Spiece Indy Heat AAU coach Jared Quarles. "He really liked it. It made him want to be in Texas. He toured the campus and saw the facilities. Coach Barnes walked him around for a couple of hours. I don't know if he expected to be with coach that long. Coach (Chris) Ogden basically set everything up. I know they really enjoyed it. He really liked Coach Barnes' attitude. [It was] straight forward, letting him know where he stood, where he fit in the program. Barnes told him he could get better in his program, which is something D'Vauntes can benefit from, especially with the guards they've (Longhorns) had."

Smith-Rivera has been a really interesting prospect to follow. He is not the first major guard prospect to come through North Central, but he will be the second since Jason Gardner to go out-of-state to play college ball.

I think he really wants to play point guard at the next level and he wasn't going to get that opportunity with Ronnie Johnson (Purdue, '12) playing at that position.

This is real late news and not sure if I should put it here but I'm going to anyway.

Gavin Thurman, Class of '12 Wichita Southeast forward, is transferring to Heights.   I haven't seen much about him on here.  He plays with KC Pump & Run.  He is a 6'7" power forward who is mad thin, I'm guessing about 175 lbs.  He doesn't bang, he doesn't rebound but has good low post moves and a better face up game.  He's the best big in the city league but there's no good bigs here.  He has scored very well against Heights when he was matched up against them.  He will play take the starting spot vacated by Evan Wessel.  The relevance here is simply his impact on Ellis, Heights, and the 6A state basketball tournament, its already over.  The only way Thurman ends up in the Big 12 is by way of a community college, he will likely be a mid-major signee.
