How Many Credit Cards Do You Have?

i'm ready to apply for some new cards. in the past i've been denied a couple times and i'm wondering if it's due to the amount of credit i have available relative to my income. would it help or hurt me to close cards/ask for credit extensions?

generally it's impossible to speculate why you were denied for any particular card.  did you not call reconsideration?  they usually tell you exactly why you were denied?  I suppose they could be concerned about amount of credit available relative to income but a large part of your credit rating is credit available to credit utilized...in that the more credit you have available the better as long as you don't carry any balances.  in that sense, reducing the amount of credit available by closing cards would generally hurt your overall score.

ok, i thought this was the case but i wasn't sure. i was denied for the SPG card last year(called reconsideration and they didn't say much) and i wondered if their reasoning was something along the lines of "why give this low-income earner more credit, he already has 20k that he isn't using"

what i have that actually matters:
-United MilesPlus (July '13)
-Chase Freedom (June '13)
-Delta Skymiles (Aug '13)

all those spends have been met. is it too soon to try for sapphire or southwest with chase? spg is out of the question with delta so recently. so... that leaves AA... right? or us airways?

or hold out for a better deal?

You can probably get the SPG now. Amex is pretty lenient about successive cards. Sapphire may not go through, if you do try it and are shot down call the reconsideraiton line.

yeah, i actually have a decent amount of credit from the united card from chase, so i could transfer that over some of it to sapphire if denied. i think ill do that and then go for spg next.

but you have to be willing to do things like use your computer and go to the store...and sometimes it takes upwards of 15 to 20 minutes per week.  it's a lot of work.

Approved for the Citi AA card last night from Luckys link.  Also, cancelled one of the SW cards.  Lost(left at a bar) a few months ago and didnt need a new one.  Should I have kept it for another 3 months until about a month before the annual fee came in?  Should I keep my other SW card or just do others for the next year and try for companion pass 15-16 with the two business cards?  Might be sad not earning SW pts when I have the companion pass.

yeah, i just dont need more than one card to keep track of meeting the spend on at this point. spg will still be there when im done with sapphire...

Here is my scenario

- 2 credit cards with long history of good credit and 1 with shorter history.  I plan to always keep these open to keep AAoA up.
- 1 SWA card that I have gotten the bonus from that I opened in March
- Just got 2 new cards today (one from Chase which is the SWA card also)

Is it better to cancel that SWA card for credit score purposes or keep it open?  credit lines are all about the same.
