This.  Slu and I make $500 to $700 a year on citibank and discover.  Never have paid a penny in interest.  I guess we are smart enough not to reward the banks and have them reward us.

You do realize that there are fees that are added to credit card transaction that the "store" pays?  And of course that store doesn't really pay them.  They pass them on to consumers.  In fact, there has been a trend over the last couple of years for gas stations to return to the credit-cash dichotomy pricing.  Most stations don't advertise it.

I use the cc fees when I'm negotiating prices on large items.  The money I've saved by making cash transactions and negotiating prices is easily several hundred dollars.

What's a large purchase? If you're making enough truly large purchases each year to save several hundred dollars while negotiating every purchase to the 2~4 percent leeway in cc fees, you could be getting thousands of dollars in rewards. Provided you know how to keep a budget and use the credit cards for purchases you were already going to make.

You're also losing money in your scenario by paying more on all the small stuff that you don't negotiate on by paying cash. With the right credit card you could recoup these higher costs quite easily.

I have to fly to DC from Wichita this summer, most likely on Delta.  I'd prefer not to have to pay anything for this.  Looking to the free travel aficionados here.  Any advice on this?

You can get the Delta Amex with no fee for the first year and get 25k (I think) miles after the first purchase.  That will either get you a free flight there or get you $250 off a Delta flight as miles can be converted to dollars for flights if you have the card.  Make sure to cancel it before the first year is up though or it has an annual fee of $45 or $75.

Oh, also, they have a business amex gold card too.  You can sign up for both.  Just make up a company and say you have zero earnings because you are just starting.  I did both with no problems.  You should then get double the sign up bonus.

the potential problem is that you won't get the card until a few weeks after you sign up, and then you won't get the miles for a few more weeks after that. by that time, there may not be seats and stuff left on the flights you want. potentially an issue.
