It's only category 1-4 hotels iirc

You're right.  Lol, that vancouver hotel was only a 3.

Do you get something when you pay the Hyatt annual fee?

A free night anywhere.  I used it well 2 times ago to PAK in one of the nicest spots in Vancouver, and poorly last time in Florida for a class.

you can actually get it without paying the fee. the free night hits your account the same time the fee does. then just call and cancel the card and have your fee reimbursed.

I did that last year with Marriott.

Yeah the fee just hit my account. And now I see that I have a reward night in my Hyatt account. I was debating on whether I should cancel the card or not.

Other factors that had me keeping it in the past were that I didn't have a sapphire at the time so I used the hyatt for my restaurant/travel 2x card and for most daily stuff that I didn't get a bonus for from others, and to keep my boosted Hyatt and MLife status. But now I have a sapphire again and haven't particularly needed those status boosts, so maybe this will be the year I drop it and get it again when I'm out of 5/24 purgatory in 2017.

i have kept mine a couple years for the status and the free night. $75 is not bad when the room you are getting is likely $200+

Mrs. y-l_a is finally ready to get a card with a  reward program. She doesn't want an annual fee and wants to be able to redeem for flights or hotels, best options? Still the southwest card, any good AA card or something else?

those all have fees. everything good will. get a chase sapphire preferred and just pay the fee would be my advice.

if you mean a card to keep, citi and cap one will waive the fees every year forever if you spend a dece amount on their cards.  you just have to remember to call in each year.

it's not worth it, though.  churn.

chase freedom is a good no fee one to keep around. Especially if there is a sapphire in the household.

Actually probably only if there is a sapphire

with 5/24, keeping the freedom is a no-brainer.

5% is still 5%, even if it's just cash.  better than almost all alternatives for those spend categories.  and if you aren't keeping or churning a sapph, presumably it's because of 5/24 so you can't churn the freedom either.  if you are staying 5/24 eligible, you don't want to waste one of the 5 on churning freedoms.  so either way, it's a keeper.

Did not know about the Hyatt free night even after cancellation deal. I checked Mrs. WonderMeal's account, and sure enough it was there.  :D

I think that the Ink Plus is currently in the middle of a 70k point bonus if you apply for the card at a branch. Has anyone ever done this? Do you have to go and sit in the branch and talk to a human, or can you just like grab a brochure and GTFO of there? Please advise.

I dislike the account of time it requires. (at least when it comes to credit card issues)

I enjoy talking to people. The problem is that this is an Ink for Mrs. WonderMeal (now our house's designated Chase card applier due to 5/24), so there is a 0% chance that she will make time to go to a Chase branch and lie to a human's face about why she needs another Ink.

I'll just try to refer Mrs. WonderMeal and settle for 65k. :(

yeah, it wasn't your specific example and as rusty points out physically going into a bank is some time sink. I was more stealth mocking the people that hate to call and cancel their cards or ask for fees waived or ask for their card app to be approved.
