using online resources and brain training apps, i have learned both alphabets (syllabaries). they each contain all the sounds available to the language. pretty much all i have left to learn is vocabulary, grammar, and 2000 kanji and i will be done.

avios = no
ur = no
spg = yes to both by transferring to either AA or JAL and then using their points to upgrade the flight. I'd make sure you can do this and there is upgrade availability before I transferred any points to JAL though. And then see if they can save that availability because there may be a delay in getting the SPG to JAL. AA is less risky because you'll eventually use those miles anyway. Also SPG transfer at 20k SPG-25k miles so if you're transferring transfer at least 20k (to AA, not JAL where you would want to transfer the minimum whatever it is).

Yes, good work. it's the international taxes. BA doesn't have late booking fees so it's good to remember to use it instead of AA miles for those. another thing that's great about Avios is you can cancel award flights last minute and you only forfeit the taxes. This could be a lot of money on an international route but domestic it's like $5. So you can make a bunch of early bookings for trips you may take if you want to assure award availability and then cancel and not be out much.

Awesome.  I'd thought the Avios short-distance increase wouldn't affect me, but now I'll look into more mix-and-match train/plane trips before February.

is this going to be your first credit card? if so, i recommend building some rapport with chase and get the chase freedom once the offer is high. there should be a link on the first post of this thread to get steve dave some points for a referral, too.

if its your first credit card ever, you dont have a chance in hell of getting approved for CSP. get CSP in a few months and transfer the freedom points to it.

not at all, you really should have both and the freedom is a good starting point. after you use this one for awhile circle back here and we'll tell you where to go next. also, don't use the points for anything until you have a CSP and then transfer them to that card because they are worth significantly more.
