I'd get an AA card and a Sapphire Preferred card. Use the AA card until you get the min. spend and then the Sapphire Preferred card for all daily purchases. cancel the AA card before the annual fee. once you have met the min. spend on the AA card come back to the thread and we'll tell you what to get next.

If you've never owned a credit card you probably aren't going to qualify for the cards SD suggested. You can try, but my guess is you're denied. If you are denied you can send a reconsideration letter, but I tried that with my wife and didn't have any luck although she was making good money and had a lot of money in savings. Eventually got approved for the Capital One Journey card and got some credit built.

She already has 30k AAdvantage miles and I have 6k. (spent the rest  )

Which credit cards should she and I apply for to get the airfare free?

I've already done the citi AAdvantage card (so has she) but other than that we should be able to do whatever.

I did the citi thank you card. You can redeem the "thank you points" for some neat stuff.

Damn, should have checked this thread again before my wife applied today. Sorry SD. Quick question, for air travel is it better to redeem through the rewards portal or transfer the points to Southwest or United?
