It's not like Oakland is out there using sabermetrics and everyone else is still having washed up players scout other players and prospects. Jerry Jones isn't making MLB trades and drafting MLB players from his living room den. the margins are so incredibly thin on all moves that it's 70% payroll, 25% luck, 5% knowing about baseball stuff that some other guy doesn't already know about.

Don't people realize that Beltran arguably had a better year than any of our hitters last year? Not like he is washed up.

royals wouldn't be contracting for his performance last year.  they'd be contracting for his performance over the next three years.  if anyone wants to bet beltran v. butler obs over the next three years, i'll put however much money they want to lose on butler.

if they're signing him without getting rid of butler, fine.  or if they trade butler and actually get equal or greater value for him, fine.  i think they could spend the money more wisely, but fine.  if the only way they'll cut loose some money is for a sentimental publicity move they think will sell some tickets, ok.  better they spend some money than don't.

No belvis, that makes sense. WE DON'T WANT SENSE, WE WANT CARLOS! Durrrrp slurp derrr

You can keep Beltran and Butler for 2014, with the plan to move Billy next offseason.

Its ok to be fans and go with our heart right now. Carlos is my favorite player of the past 20 years. Its ok that I want him to come home, even if we overpay. We're a small market team, we HAVE to overpay to get free agents.

Everybody has to overpay if they want to sign a good free agent, small market team or not.

Realistically, aren't we contracting him for his performance just this year? Isn't our window basically one more year? If we have to throw Beltran more than he is worth at the end of the deal to get him for next year so that we really have a shot, I'm all for it.

What other guys are out there that can hit like him? Serious question. If not Beltran, then who?

beltran has to DH. he just has to. so in that sense it doesn't make sense for the royals. sorry everybody.

In a game winning situation with two outs and bottom of the 9th, the DH is up to bat.  Who do you trust more to make a hit?  Beltran or Butler?

FWIW, Beltran played 137 games at RF last year.  I know he isn't the greatest fielder still but his fielding pct. was .980 and the Royals combined RF platoon was .982.

Lough and Frenchy were better, Cain and Maxwell were worse.

Really good argument against fielding percentage as a stat right here folks

For the love of god please don't use fielding pct to judge an outfielder's defensive capability.

Ok...sabers rtot/yr for beltran is -9, and lough is 9.   Lough bat 5 HR/33 RBI/1.0 oWAR in 96 games.  Beltran hit 24 HR/84 RBIs/3.2 oWAR in 145.

I think the trade off for offense is worth it, considering our defense is already very good.

if beltran plays RF and his defense is accceptable, then go for it.

just ask yourself why Buster Olney, Carlos Beltran, and every GM talking with Olney are conceding beltran cant play RF anymore and that hell play DH.  ask the Cards, who let him go for this very reason.

if having Beltran at DH puts us in contention to win the division and gets us in the playoffs,  go for it.  just not convinced it will make that big a difference in terms of  wins.

The Royals announced today that they have acquired OF Norichika Aoki from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for pitcher Will Smith.

Does that put a nail in it?

Trading Billy has been mentioned.  If we are still interested in Beltran, then it means that Billy is gone since we just acquired a leadoff RF.

I think more likely if we get Beltran will be Aoki / Cain splitting time in CF and Butler and Beltran both playing 140+ games. Beltran split between RF and DH, with Cain in RF when Beltran DHs.  Also, Cain will surely be on the DL for ~80 games.
