Various writers keep suggesting that we'd trade Billy if we got Carlos.  That would really piss me off.

But, while I want to hope with Cartier, I have to think that we are being used as leverage with the Yankees.

ESPNs peeps keep reporting that NYY officials are overly emphatic about 2 years being the max from the yanks.  This was reported several times after the suspected 3 year offer from us.

so if we land Carlos (sounds like about a 50% chance) what are the odds we keep Billy?

Worried Canó isn't going to sign with Yankees. That would mean more money to spend on Beltrán + Infante.

Another thing about Infante is that he can also play OF which would be awesome since it's obvious Beltrán isn't going to be an every day RF.

Buster Olney: Oakland talking with multiple teams about Brett Anderson, an attractive option among the starting pitchers available. Owed $8m for '14.
If we have to trade away Butler this would be a fairly lateral move for both parties.

we need power in right field, so oversigning Beltran to come in as a replacement DH seems pretty Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).  Likewise, oversigning old balls Beltran to come in and suck ass in RF seems pretty Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).

Either way, doesn't seem like the Royals improve much.

I think he played 140 plus games each of the past two seasons.

Don't kill the messenger fellas.  Buster Olney is saying Beltran was atrocious in RF and that he's ending his career as a DH.  And this is the consensus amongst GMs.  So, if he comes here, Butler is gone and were overpaying a DH for an extra year that no other team will touch.

And we still don't have a RF.

Maybe we want to replace a DH with another DH who has power and the ability to hit the ball over the fence?   :dunno:

Yeah, def upgrade over butler for next 2 years.  But it means no cash for RF upgrade and Butler is gone.  Does this make us a lot better?   :dunno:

Seems leaving butler at DH and buying a stud RF achieves the same result.

You can keep Beltran and Butler for 2014, with the plan to move Billy next offseason.

Its ok to be fans and go with our heart right now. Carlos is my favorite player of the past 20 years. Its ok that I want him to come home, even if we overpay. We're a small market team, we HAVE to overpay to get free agents.

People complain about free agency regardless.  We go for big names and people complain about "overpaying".  We go for a bunch of small mediocre names to fill holes and people complain we aren't getting anyone that will make an impact.

All I know is I'm happy with being a buyer instead of a seller.

Don't people realize that Beltran arguably had a better year than any of our hitters last year? Not like he is washed up.
