Royals reach $1.3 million deal with Italian shortstop
The Royals opened the international signing season with a bang Tuesday morning by reaching a $1.3 million deal with Marten Gasparini, a 16-year-old Italian shortstop often cited as the best European prospect in history.

Yeah, so I read it as they reached this deal for a signing bonus of $1.3 million.  I would guess that wether or not they can actually sign him to a contract remains to be seen.

Or something like that

what?  i mean, i've never paid a lot of attention to the money side of sports, but i've always assumed that a signing bonus was a bonus for signing (a contract).

That's great he's the best prospect in European history, but I'm not sure I can even name the best European player in the league right now?

Here's another article on him.

At the very least, it sounds like a neat kid to have in the organization.

Yeah, I'm not sure.  I'm probably confused with when teams have to bid a certain amount of money to even begin to negotiate a contract with an international player (see: Yu Darvish, Aroldis Chapman, others).  This situation may be completely different for all I know.

Trade/Extend

Go

Offer an extension, but only 3 years.

Shop to trade, but only accept high level talent in return. No 26 year old utility losers. We need high level outfield prospects who can hit, or high level starting pitching prospects. Don't settle for a grab bag of crap.

If not, finish the season with him and take the compensatory pick and be satisfied with your investment.

I don't see us getting front line/ready to go triple A talent for him.  Am I crazy?

Depends. Teams get desperate in late July, especially teams that think that they are a good starter away from greatness. Also, the return doesn't need to be MLB ready, just high level talent. I'm ok with taking a chance on a few huge upside AA or A players. One of the worst deals we made was the Beltran deal because ownership decided the return had to be MLB ready.

Darvish, Chapman etc. were all put through the posting system.  I think because they were already pros?  I'm not really sure how the Cuban thing works.  I think they can just sign with anyone after they go to mexico to get citizenship so they are eligible for a work visa.

So yeah I think the $1.3 million is all they paid the dude.  Unfortunately, the entire budget now is only $2.9 million for the entire year per team for international signings.

So look for a bunch of small signings.  That was the Royals blowing their wad on a big int'l signing.

I am about two seconds from making you retards post in a special respect only Royals thread called Retards on the Royals.
.
The real retards are the ones running a major league team that hasn't been to the playoffs since 1985.

Let's think about the logic of the organization.

Step One: Drop millions on 16-20 year old prospects.

Step Two: After you have spent 5 million or so, you bring them up the big leagues.

Step Three:  You send them back down and bring them back up several times.

Step Four:    As they end their initial contracts we find out they are either  Bad, Good, or Great. Their next decision is where the organization really shines.

If they are really Great we can't afford to pay them because we don't have a playoff ready team and that would just be dumb to have Great players on our team. At this point they must be traded for prospects because we are not ready to have a playoff caliber team.

If they are merely Good, than we have to overpay them by a lot because it is cheaper to overpay Good players than to have Great players and make a winning team. You know that they are just good because they almost never make it to the all star game.

If they are bad, we have to overpay them because they just need more time and other teams might get these guys cheap and fix them. They will get fixed eventually with us and we will then be able to trade them to another team for more prospects when they finally get good.

One of these years we are going to have 4 or 5 first or second year All Stars on the team and then we will have a good team for a year or two!!!!!!!!!

Guys I am going to Cry with Tears of Happiness when this day occurs :bawl:.

I am thinking Royals .500 exactly at the break.

12 over .500 at the end of the year.

The Francouer move makes me optimistic the team will make the final necessary trade to make a good push this year.  I think we screwed around too much at the start of the year and we still don't make the playoffs because of that.  (but I think we will be close)
