I was reserving judgment on Moose, but now I'm getting concerned...really concerned.

He'll be an alright player. We just don't know when. If he takes another 4-5 years to progress like Gordon, all of the rest of the pieces are likely gone, and he'll be useless to us unfortunately. I feel like our window is closing, and that concerns me.

Our window is only 2 years that is the problem.

that's why i hated the trade. we took a 5 year window and shrunk it down to two at a time when our team is still very young and still unproven with the only veteran influence being the worst everyday player in the game (though he does smile an awful lot). also, detroit is ridiculously good and we have no shot at winning our division during this little window. on top of that, we had to give up a potential megastar in this effort to finish 2nd in the division for a couple of years. kc sports gonna kc sports ya know.

Yeah, the only problem is we didn't have the pitching we needed for the 5 year window either IMO.

I think the front office and ownership was embarrassed by the our time stuff and we flopped. They felt pressure to "win now" and went all in on a trade that makes us a possible .500 to slightly above .500 team.

Duffy was impressive as crap before TJ last year. Paulino was even better. They'll be back to normal (or should be given the recovery rate of TJ surgeries these days) by the end of this season/offseason. Zimmer is flying through the system impressively.. They were always going to resign Guthrie.. They may have still gone after Santana.. They didn't need to give up a potential star, and 18 years of control of other good prospects for 2 years of an ace when this team, ace or no ace, needs a sizable miracle to even make the playoffs.

In a two years, when hosmer and co. are hitting their stride - YES. Do it. make a trade. but now? no. it was a panic move when we didn't need to panic.

I agree almost completely with your post, but Jeff Francouer is hardly the "only veteran influence" on the team.  James Shields is widely considered to be one of the best clubhouse guys in the game.  Throw in guys like oscar Chen, Jeremy Guthrie, Miguel Tejada and Alex Gordon (let's face it, he's not "young" anymore, and he seems like one of those "lead by example" kind of guys), and there's plenty of good veteran influences.

All that being said, I think the whole "clubhouse leaders" thing is kind of overrated.  The reason teams lose games is because they make 3 run errors, strike out or pop out with the bases loaded multiple times in the same game and walk 7 batters in the first 6 innings.

shields is post-trade. i was referencing our lineup pre-trade. chen is in the bullpen. guthrie's never won anything. tejada is a utility guy who hasn't played a meaningful role on a good team in like a decade. alex hasn't been on a team that's won more than 70 games since AA ball.. frenchy is the only everyday player who has been on a playoff team. and he was the 4th outfielder.. yes, shields has won a playoff start. that's really going to come in handy when we win 82 games and miss the playoffs. can't effing wait for that big game james bulldog-like mentality to carry us past the indians in the final game of the regular season sitting 14 games back as the tigers and everybody else party their way into the postseason.

all that aside - yeah, veteran clubhouse presence is the most overrated thing in the history of sports. but guess what - dayton and co. effing eat that crap up for breakfast. lunch. and dinner.

Are we melting down already everybody?

Great article on espn today re: Greinke vs. Shields. "leadership" may be defined as somebody just competing his face off and bringing his A game every day. Greinke? nope. Shields? yes.

my meltdown began last year around the time we lost 12 in a row, continued as we continued to trot frenchy out there everyday, blew the eff up when the trade went down, and has been hibernating peacefully for a while now. i'm just going to enjoy watching the wins when they come and going out to the K, etc.

My problem with the trade is that Dayton Moore realized he was gone in two years if he didn't fix it, so he made his two year window our two year window.

I don't want to start over in two years, guys. :(

its what ever. Fire sale everyone in two years get a bunch of prospects, and wait for a new group.

Eh, no worries on the trade.  Excitement and progress now is good for me and no one really knows what Meyers is going to be.  (See Moose)  What we do know is that we have one Ace and one good starting pitcher we can rely on for 2 years.  If Paulino and Duffy come back and are in great form what's to say we dont trade someone this summer like Santana or Davis for a bat at 2nd base or LF?

I like the trade because historically we just havent been able to develop pitching but we sure as hell can put together outfields that the likes of the yankees/redsox/dodges love to buy and put out there.

Worst thing about Moose is his fielding this year opposed to last. Well also he sucks at hitting. So basically everything.

And also cutting the throw from Cain that led to a run.

In general (not just Moose), our defense is very poor this year.

Excellent insight.

Other than Cain & Gordon, who's performing defensively up to expectations?

Dyson you beautiful bastard.

Also, Moose's last two at-bats have been hard liners, so that's promising.

I can't believe people (not here) have been saying Yost should move Gordo down in the lineup and put Dyson at leadoff. Dyson is being used exactly the way he should be. Do you know how valuable it is to be able to put the fastest person in baseball on base whenever you want to late in a tight game?
