I'm a stats nerd, but not a baseball stats nerd. If you had one "go to" stat to evaluate a baseball player what would it be? OPS for batting and WHIP for pitching?

FWIW, I know that in theory it is math/numbers based, but I don't like WAR. It just seems to arbitrary to me.

it doesn't work, and the amount of people who use O/U instead of "odds" or "percent chance" is absolutely insane.

Between the 2, I put more stock into OPS for a hitter rather than Whip for a pitcher. Great starting pitchers will usually have very good ERA & WHIP. However Syndergard had a 2.60 ERA (4th best in MLB) and a 1.15 Whip. There were a couple of pitchers who had a Whip not much higher (1.22-1.26) but ERA in the 4.2-4.6 range. As a pitcher, you can give up hits but if you're Slug allowed is low and you are good at getting out of jams....You're ERA can still be very good.

Combining the OnBase & Slug to get the OPS is combining the 2 most important offensive stats IMO. A player who can get on base and then produce a high number of total bases by hitting XBase hits....That player is very valuable to his team

** Kennedy last year in starts 1-10 & 21-33 combined had a 2.82 ERA. Starts 11-20 was 5.89 and his Whip was only 0.10 higher. His Slug allowed was awful giving up lots of HRs.

I would suggest Weighted Runs Created (wRC+) for hitters and Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) for pitchers. Both scaled to be intuitive, wRC+ with 100 = average, and FIP set to ERA scale.

So our 8th and 9th hitters tonight have now combined for 14 total bases and 29 SO.

I have no idea what Soler will bring but having him and Whit in lineup most every day just can't here soon enough
