the bonus would make sense.  just getting him work doesn't make sense to me, because you don't see the starters ever pitch relief instead of their side sessions normally.  if it better to pitch live instead of in practice, they should do it all the time, not just on the last day of the season.

Side sessions are more about work than getting outs. There's no guarantee that innings would even be available each game.
